Absolutely! And research shows that features like Face ID and fingerprints even further enable violent, forced phone access by police and authorities — particularly targeting the most marginalized the-decenter.ghost.io/the-body-as-...
The Body as a Password: The Cost of Face ID
Convenience is costing people their freedom. Research shows that features like Face ID and fingerprints enable violent, forced phone access by police and authorities, writes Afsaneh Rigot.

and design them to be used by the most at risk people in society, it will make your app better for everyone including those who need it the most without singling them out. Afsaneh Rigot talks about this in her excellent paper "Design from the Margins" (2/2) www.de-center.net/what-is-desi...

Sadly, most who need to take extra precautions may not know to avoid it, as they’re framed as very secure& private with more transparency. Why we take a very proactive approach pushing for tech design with the most marginalized centered — so consumer tech doesn’t go from convenience to surveillance

Thanks, Jaime. Yes, the promise is that they won’t need to lock but that’s in practice unlikely — it requires building these tools understanding how power works in practice, particularly law enforcement. Tried to explain here a bit. bsky.app/profile/thed...
Good Q. There’s a big gap between the promise & practice. History of enforcement shows what actually happens. Even with NFC, in practice (especially at borders), many will likely be asked to hand over their phone for a closer look or manual verification of the ID if there's any issue or suspicion.

True! But the risks for marginalized communities remain in both domestic and international travel.

Apple is hinting at expansion after the pilot, too. Plus, the commercialized creep from convenience to requirement is high

May be convenient for some atm, but surveillance&exclusion for others

Real-world scenarios of enforcement or technical glitches. E.g at borders or TSA, agents requiring manual inspection if the system is unfamiliar to them, or to verify more detailed information. Requiring people to hand over devices unlocked, despite any security features. Why we push back from now

Agreed. Look at the most marginalised and targeted to see the consequences of these features. We document some of these and the impacts are worse than most know bsky.app/profile/thed...
Biometric locks — like Face ID & fingerprints — have already made it easier for authorities to access our devices with devastating consequences for the most marginalized. Now imagine when an unlocked phone becomes your passport.
