“My Savage Year” is like Nabokov with a sawed-off. An intersection of memory, regret, True Crime, suburban darkness, and violence.

It will haunt you and you will be better for it.
Had reason to re-read “My Savage Year” and I have to say, I’m pretty fucking good at this.

My maternal grandfather's iron puddler ancestors were violently evicted by French national guardsmen during the 1848 revolution. On May 2nd, 1970, my mother fled her dorm room at KSU following a fire alarm and was subsequently chased by the ONG. What an unfortunate family tradition this is.

You have three more days to leave me a voicemail and tell me about the best history book you read this year! Don't overthink it! Don't make me kill this episode! Share some history love!
This will only work if enough people actually do it, so take a minute to give your favorite book some love! The author will definitely appreciate it, and so will all of our TBR piles.
For the last episode of the year, I want to try something fun: I want to hear from YOU about the best history book you read this year. Click "send voicemail" at draftingthepast.com and leave me a brief message with your name, the book you loved, and why. Deadline is Dec. 6!

The restaurant in the background is less interesting than the X-wing fighter parked in front. Many happy memories of meeting my folks here for breakfast on Sundays twenty years ago.

It took twelve years, but I started submitting my master's-thesis-turned-manuscript to contests and open reading periods. It'd be great if I could do this without the onslaught of cringing and anxiety.

Like any other aging punk/metalhead couple, "Fairytale of New York" is a holiday mainstay in our house. However, despite hundreds of viewings, I only today recognized a young Matt Dillon in the music video.

This is my new favorite podcast. I've spent years and years reading about the Seven Years' War and The American Revolution throughout my genealogy research, and this podcast has helped me fully contextualize the lived experiences of my ancestors during this chaotic era.
Episode 3 of Worlds Turned Upside Down: The Triumph is here! 🎧 Following three years of stinging defeats in the Seven Years' War, the British begin to turn the tide against the French in North America largely because Indigenous peoples decided the war should end.

I've been on social media, in one way or another, since the halcyon days of LiveJournal and Friendster. In my twenty years as a social media user, I always feel awkward when I first start posting on a new platform. Making lists seems to help, so here is a 'get to know me' thread in list format./

While I intend to use this account for my archival research business, I figure I'll blab about my writing projects too. This well-worn/well-loved photograph of my parents was taken in 1968 at Kent State University. Their experiences during May 4, 1970 are at the foundation of my current project.
