A 13-year-old boy was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in Everett after an interaction with members of the Everett Police Department and sent to a juvenile detention facility in Virginia, according to his mother and immigration lawyer Andrew Lattarulo.

The boy’s mother, Josiele Berto, was called to pick her son up from the Everett Police Department on Thursday, the day he was arrested. After waiting for about an hour and a half, she was told her son was taken by ICE, Berto told the Globe in a phone interview.

“My world collapsed,” Berto said in Portuguese.

From the police department, the boy was taken to ICE’s holding facility in Burlington on Thursday evening, where he spent a night before being transferred by car to the Northwestern Regional Juvenile Detention Center in Winchester, Va., on Friday morning, his mother said. The juvenile facility is more than 500 miles away from Everett.

The boy is a 7th-grader at Albert N. Parlin School in Everett, his mother said. The teen and his family, who are Brazilian nationals, have a pending asylum case and are authorized to work legally in the United States, Lattarulo said.

As big a fan of Ultravox as I am, I had to get their first single. John Foxx was a major influence on what would come after him, and before him (Bowie, Bolan). A reggae backbeat here?

Book 164 📚 for 2025.
Disclaimer: McEnroe is my favorite athlete of all time, so my eye is somewhat jaundiced when it comes to his writing. For me at least it was a fun read, which is important, amirite? Only quibble: he's not/wasn't middle class. Available everywhere, including your local library.
An image of the front cover of former pro tour tennis player and current tennis announcer John McEnroe's memoir, But Seriously (2017). This picks up where his first memoir, You Can't Be Serious, left off in 2002, so perhaps there'll be at least one more book before the decade ends. The cover is plain white, author's name in black text, title in red italic text, and McEnroe is sitting atop an umpire's chair, which is clever given how many umpires he feuded with during his playing days.

There is no way forward for Democrats that does not involve examination, prosecution and restitution of and for the acts committed by this administration in the last 9 months, and that is going to be hard and unpleasant and, sometimes, very politically unpopular.

Book 163 📚 for 2025. I am sure that the Nisei experience wasn't as positive in other states, particularly after reading so much about the South, but nice to see many opportunities for growth in my adopted state of last residence. Good read. Available everywhere, including your library. #LocalAngle

The closure of the Iowa State Historical Society archive in Iowa City is a travesty. And part of a now-decades-long campaign of resentment and retaliation by state government against Iowa City and the University of Iowa 🗃️
