The small, soft sculptures are featured in our current exhibition ‘Just Browsing’, where you are invited to touch and hold the soft sculptures and play with them as her cats did, stack them into towers, or create patterns from them.

Sufea’s ‘squishies I made for my cats’ series was made using material recycled from old Tate Gallery uniforms, where she’s previously worked. The name was influenced by her cats, who enjoyed playing with the small sculptures as she was making them.

The manifesto has been displayed as a large quilted banner across the walls, using a colourful signal code to express the hopes, dreams and voices of the children she collaborated with. Can you crack the code and find out what their message is?

Together, they also created a manifesto for freedom. In honour of Liverpool’s dockworkers, their manifesto uses signal code, a system developed to communicate across language through the use of flags and light signals, often called "the sign language of the sea".

Garth Gratrix's series of beach towels, 'Shy Girl', are inspired by the seaside culture of his hometown of Blackpool. The minimalist motifs printed onto the towels refernce seaside towns, working-class culture, and LGBTQ+ identity.

Ffion Evans' large textile pieces feature motif's relating to Welsh culture, with spoons and Welsh hats hidden within some patterns and details of her work. She is interested in the hierarchies of craft and labour, and how we can form connections with an artwork through feeling the materials.

Lewis Prosser creates weaved baskets from willow grown in the area of South West England where he grew up. He's inspired by traditional folk characters and costumes, and often creates masks and weaved outfits specifically for performances.

Gratrix has never shown ‘Shy Girl’ with the invitation to touch before, but noticed that visitors instinctively want to touch the towels. In Just Browsing, you are welcome to pick up the beach towels and hang them from the rails, to neaten them up & create new shapes

You’re invited to hold and squeeze Evans’ large fabric pieces hung on the walls. There are smaller textile sculptures scented with lavender, that you can pick up and smell, and are also available to purchase from the Gallery and take away with you.

Evans is interested in the hierarchies of craft and labour, and how textile methods of working are seen as more feminine, and valued less than other art forms like paintings or sculptures. She likes to subvert this thinking by creating large-scale, tactile fabric pieces, designed interacted with.
