The Spirit of '92 incarnate. Hippie ideals, punk attitude, and a grunge wardrobe.

REMINDER: I don’t fucking work for you.

I am enjoying the spectacle of folks who can’t seem to grasp how much folks hate them make plans as if they have an eternal mandate.

Very fitting for this era of catastrophic unforced errors.

To commemorate my Pilgrim ancestry, and the fact my forebears founded the town HPL based Innsmouth upon before decamping to settle the region of Maine made famous by King, here’s my grandpa’s cousin writing about searching for our ancestral home:

The only explanation I have for the Ellisons' antics are that the Younger and Elder have a bet over who will land in the biggest world of shit when the pendulum swings in the other direction.

“Why is RFK Jr so convinced he’s right?”

Because he’s a child of extreme privilege, turbocharged by a fucked up family who indulged and excused his worst behaviors instead of seeing he got the help he needed to treat his deep seated trauma. All the drugs he’s done haven’t helped him either.

In my senior year, the HS hired a science dept. chair from one of the rich Essex County exurbs and she started up a Science Club/Team to compete in events with all the rich kid schools in the region.

I joined because my friend Scott did and it was interesting to visit other, better funded schools.

My father’s youngest sister, who was only five years older than me moved in with us in 1980, and she and her friends had “sacred” songs which they’d go dead silent when they came on the radio.

“Walk on the Wild Side” was one of them.
17) I’ve said this before, but: somehow, i knew who Gary Gygax was before I knew who Lou Reed was

Anyway, it's fascinating to me how Warhammer and World of Darkness triggered an aesthetic transformation in the scene through the 1990s.

If you weren't around and into the scene back in the day, it's hard to convey how Games Workshop used to be the "punk" alternative to TSR's stodgy trad-fantasy thing.
White Dwarf had an ongoing flame war in the letters pages because its reviewer said Twilight 2000 was a moral abomination steeped in Reaganesque power fantasies.

Picking up my first issue of Dragon in the mid-1980s and getting floored by how cool the Citadel miniatures looked.

Then seeing an multipage ad for the launch of Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay touting the career system, the brutal combat mechanics, and the general grimy vibe.

And then 40k dropped...
Happy 50th Birthday to Games Workshop! 💀🎉

Lovely retrospective in White Dwarf including staff memories & the fun detail behind the first ever store gaming table!

What's your earliest memory of GW?

Here are two of mine - my first miniature and my first ticket to Games Day from ~20 years ago! :-)

My big Star Wars take:

I was 5 when the first movie came out and 11 when ROTJ did, which slotted perfectly for a young geek, and the rest is nostalgia snd background noise.

Finding the revelations about R-Type Delta HD’s bug kinda hilarious because they suggest reviewers were too busy coming up with fulsome praise to actually put the game through its paces.

All right, some early Late Night w. Conan stuff from 1993 started showing up in the tape transfers.

Only one episode in the batch was a new find and it was missing the last 15 minutes, but it *did* have the conclusion to the running "Woodrow Thomas gets bumped again" bit.

A 1993 episode of 120 Minutes, two episodes of Entertainment This Week from 1987 covering horror hosts and Paramount's 75th, five episodes of Friday Night Videos, Belly's network TV debut on Letterman in 1993.

Quite the haul.

I've been rereading the Avengers from the mid-70s through mid-80s, and made it to the infamous #200.

It's really bad, yet the badness has been overstated a bit because of Claremont's rebuttal story?

The team's response isn't universally "Yay! A baby!" in the story.

Two more episodes of Friday Night Videos acquired: March 12 and March 19, 1993.

Special appearances by cutting edge gangsta rap and grunge acts, Little Anthony & The Imperials and Go West.
