A large person, in Canada. Father to two, smaller persons. Wife guy. Dual citizen, a modicum of discipline.

Proud liberal. Hobbesian. Unix apostate, Classic Mac OS revanchist, tilter at path-dependent windmills. Emacsist.
This is why lustration is an absolute requirement for the second reconstruction.

That's another one, yeah

The simple fact that this person has committed this book, and has doubtlessly set themselves up materially for life, is enraging; even setting aside her gruesomely bad behaviour, this is a capital crime against the act of reading.

It's universal! We are always doing this to Them! It's a fundamental challenge of being alive, fighting back against it.

Southerners are people just like anyone else, in their variegated shades of decency, fright, fear and compassion. Stop pretending that they're not.

It's simply another form of othering, and you see it both from the "all Southerners are Bull Connor" and "all Southerners are socialists deep in their hearts" forms of dehumanizing rhetoric.

I don't think that there is a Trumpism. There are the herky-jerky spasms of id that the Big Man emits, that vaguely define a direction, and there are a bunch of competing narratives from the toadies and sycophants who have their own ~isms they're working towards.

As a thought exercise, I'm here for it.

I believe all men are flawed; all men are flawed *differently*; there is a conception of the good that we can all work towards, but that conception is unsatisfyingly incomplete over the entire world of injustices; and that the greatest human virtue, and the hardest to maintain, is empathy.

I'm just giving you a hard time. I'm certain we actually agree, here.

Nor can a government!
November 17, 2025 at 1:52 PM
You'd just need an army, not a government.
November 17, 2025 at 1:50 PM
Of course; the most important thing, to me, is not getting discouraged by the certain knowledge that you are not in fact going to usher in the Kingdom of God. That all you can do is push back and make things better locally, but that you need to believe that better things are possible.

When I moved to Massachusetts (Belmont) I was stunned by how lily white it was, and I was coming from Northern Virginia in the '80s, not exactly a hotbed of cosmopolitan diversity.
November 17, 2025 at 1:48 PM
Sure, that's a neat definition of liberal pluralism.
November 17, 2025 at 1:46 PM
Well, you wouldn't need government in that case, would you.
November 17, 2025 at 1:45 PM
Deeply unsatisfying to people burning with desire to undo the various injustices we all visit on each other. Being a person in the world is Hard, Actually, and there is no way out of this.
November 17, 2025 at 1:42 PM
There are, indeed. What I really don't understand -- and I am fully aware that this is on me -- is why the Liberal Democrats aren't going hard on this shit.

But the elimination of sin is not and must not become the goal of ordering society.

Forget it, Erb, it's TERF Island town.

Like, I can see a version of the Cybertruck that looks more like the Hyundai Heritage Series Grandeur, and would be cool; or one that looked more like a standard car, and wouldn't be as outrageously stupid. And yet!
