The Australian has obtained leaked WhatsApp messages from a head office staff group chat, in which senior operatives ridiculed the Liberal Women's Council — the peak body representing women in the Victorian division - and 76-year-old state MP Bev McArthur. The chair of the women's council late on Wednesday called for Mr Smith's resignation or removal, saying his position was untenable. The revelations come ahead of a critical state council meeting this weekend, where the party remains gripped by a bitter legal battle over whether former leader John Pesutto should be granted access to party funds to cover a $2.3m defamation payout owed to colleague Moira Deeming. In one exchange on December 3 last year, staffer Ben Zerbe asked Mr Smith whether the women's council had reached any resolutions during a meeting. "They passed it unanimously after two men told them they had to," Mr Smith replied. "Well that's grim," Mr Zerbe responded, while another staff member, Fiona Buchanan, added: "But painfully accurate. Mr Smith then posted a photo of a martini with the caption: "F U LWCV", an abbreviation for the women's council The leaked messages also show the staff deriding Ms McArthur, after she met with Mr Smith in the office in December last year. "Mondays are already bad. If Stuart Smith meets Bev every Monday — I'll be WFH," Mr Zerbe wrote on December 29. When another staffer asked for a photo of Ms McArthur "asleep in the chamber", Mr Smith shared a video of what appeared to be her waving a flag, commenting: "Here's Bev with dementia." Ms McArthur said she was "disappointed by these offensive remarks about women, but I will not be distracted from standing up for rural and regional Victorians who are being unfairly taxed and ignored by Labor". "I trust the state director will reflect on this incident, as there is no place for such comments in the Liberal Party," she said. Chair of the party's women's council, Jacquie Blackwell, called on Mr Smith to resign, and if not, for state president Philip Davis to take action. "I do think the state president should take action, I think the state director's position is untenable. We cannot accept this behaviour because what message are we sending to women, to young people in particular? The leaks will further inflame tensions inside the troubled division, which has been struggling to land a blow on Premier Jacinta Allan's government despite mounting budget blowouts and a lagging economy. The Victorian division will assemble on Saturday and Sunday for the annual state council, where the position of president will be up for re-electoon. The incumbent president Philip Davis and his immediate predecessor Greg Mirabella are the two candidates. State Opposition Leader Brad Battin and federal deputy leader Ted O'Brien will also address the council on Saturday. A draft agenda for the state council includes 62 motions proposed by party members including a call to scrap net zero targets, diversity quotas and a push for a regulated cannabis market. Any motions passed at the state council are not binding on the parliamentary Victorian Liberal Party. The council will be held as an ongoing legal dispute plays out between a member of the administrative committee, Colleen Harkin, and the wider party over the loan to Mr Pesutto. The loan covers the $2.3m in legal costs owed to Deeming after the Federal Court found in December last year that he defamed the upper house MP by falsely implying she sympathised with neo-Nazis and white supremacists. The payments were made to ensure Pesutto avoided bankruptcy and a byelection in his seat, after he made the comments when he was Victorian Liberal leader. A mediation ordered by the Supreme Court was scheduled to take place by Friday after the Harkin-led group launched a legal application to stop the loan. However, it is understood the mediation is unlikely to go ahead before the state council.
