Advice number 1 literally saved my career when I was invited for PhD interviews.
PhD admissions visits/open houses are starting to happen, and I got a comment on an old Reddit post where I was offering advice, and realized that it's actually really good advice. So here it is! (And this applies whether you've already been admitted to the program or not.) 🧵

The application for the ESO Summer Research Programme 2026 has just opened!

It‘s a six week programme in Garching close to Munich where pre-Ph.D students can work on a hands-on project.

Working at @eso.org is a fabulous experience, so please help me spread the word ✨

Hopefully, it will allow us to refocus on what truly matters in science, on big problems, on intuition and insights, on theory building, and away from the brute mechanics of publishing and the bean counting that has put the breaks on true progress in science.

For me, the hardest step of writing a paper is not starting, it's when you have written almost everything (except introducgion), have your plots almost as you want them, but the overall paper is just not. Good. Enough.

And it's so close to completion, but it's just not there yet.

What's yours?

ALMA found evidence for complex organic compounds, such as sugars & amino acids, in a protoplanetary disc.

Thus, discs may inherit these complex molecules from interstellar clouds.

Tip for PhD applicants reaching out to prospective advisors: Don’t use an LLM to write these emails. It’s not a great first impression to express your admiration for a recent paper the faculty member published if that paper does not exist.
