So much politics in my feed. I get it but we have to quit variously demonizing and lionizing politicians whom we will never even meet and focus more on helping people who are actually present in our lives through #MutualAid

The other thing we have to stop.doing as academics is churning out Ph.D.s In 2023 there were 57k Ph.D.s awarded in the U.S., which is sharply up from numbers more like 40k about ten years ago. Are job prospects better? Professors: if you want to do research, do it yourself.

Let me say a few words about the parade of executives in Silicon Valley and elsewhere claiming that 'you can't do anything great' unless you devote your entire life to working.

AI is not even remotely coming for developers' jobs. If you believe that it is, you are buying a line from those who want developers to fear for their jobs.

higher ed will not survive in its current incarnation as the gatekeeper of class privilege. there simply aren't enough wealthy liberals, and it has long since alienated anyone else who might have risen to its defense
this in itself is not a bad thing

The people quoted in this article are all "progressives".
We used to take pride in the fact that unions created the 40-hour workweek, but I guess that's just another way in which 'the left' fails to distinguish itself from fascists nowadays.

Like Mark Cuban and Barack Obama, this founder says work–life balance doesn’t exist for the successful: ‘Even if I am on vacation, you're on 24 hours a day'
Even after successfully building a multi-million dollar business, the CEO of That’s It Nutrition still grinds all hours of the day: ‘Even if I am on vacation, you're on 24 hours a day.'

selfie taken from the coffee shop to prove to my neighbor that I made it across the river in the kayak the other day. it was longer than I though and hot and I lost my sunglasses in the river but . . . made it and I think it's a real option

I go back and forth between states of being where I pretend like we are going to capitalistically solve the sustainability problem and admitting that we never will
this person -- who as of now is no longer my partner -- was pulling me toward the side of the truth
I miss her like crazy 💔

We can do machine learning (there is no 'artificial intelligence') without killing the planet -- the problem isn't data it's the overuse of neural fucking networks

I cannot emphasize enough how true & real this is.
In almost anywhere on the political spectrum you ID with or major issue, there’s probably a bot/troll operation to encourage your rage and vitriol.
And how/where that rage gets directed, esp understandable rage, is what they are out to influence.

People on this app get really angry every time I point out that social media manipulation is a real phenomenon that we are all stewing in and that’s having real world consequences and I’m sure part of that is engagement farmers who do that manipulation not liking people talking about it

I am basically in math and my curves look like the purple ones. I worked my ass off to get tenure, but you can't just keep that up. It cost me a lot.

Publication rates before and after tenure: clear decline post-tenure in non-lab-based fields and sustained in lab-based fields. Super interesting.

I want to fight but I also want to gently ask progressives whether or not they recognize that the leadership and funders of the Democratic Party are not only estranged from most people but in many ways every bit as greedy and exclusionary as the leadership and funders of the Republicans. 1/

I wrote this in the waning times of the pandemic, but it seems more urgent now, with science in the United States under full-frontal attack by the political establishment.

egalitarianism in science for the sake of the planet
the pandemic proves that science cannot simply expect the public to respect its expertise. to improve things we have to ditch the prestige game
