Good question! The laptop has 8 core GPU vs 28 on the Steam Machine and 2GB vs 8GB so the graphics capabilities of that particular laptop are substantially less for high end uses.

Lenovo is willing to sell an AMD laptop with a screen and battery for $399 so why not? That's even through a retail channel that's taking a cut! Valve gets the benefit of direct sales.

Based on my personal experience doing IT support I would not buy something from HP if other options are available. Calling their custom support was infuriating.
