People respond accordingly when they are told repeatedly that queer people are a danger or that migrants are a threat. And that it is OK to be hostile as these are just ‘legitimate concerns’ rather than just blatant bigotry.

Gratitude should never be based on entitlement and should always include the recognition that we are not so different, and certainly no better, from those who weren't given what we have. We certainly don't deserve our gifts more than they do.

Gratitude is an obligation to others, not a recital.

The fact that Sophia's age was still being questioned by the time of the actual trial was one of the most idiotic aspects of this whole affair, as if it can't be trusted that the various court and law enforcement officials wouldn't have verified the identity and age of everyone involved.
