Just finished this fantastic read from @joeposnanski.bsky.social.

Not only is it a book that I firmly believe every single baseball fan should read, but I’d go a step further and argue that it should sit on every fan’s coffee table so that they can pick it up and relive it every so often.

The Chicago White Sox win total for the 2025 season is set at just 49.5.

I know we’re talking about a team that won just 41 games last year, but among full seasons since 1961 (when the MLB schedule extended from 154 games to 162), just five teams have won fewer than 50 games.

You’re simply lying if you don’t agree that every photo of Austin Wells looks less like an actual photo of a baseball game and more like a photo from the set of a biopic about Thurman Munson

On Sept. 28, 1960, Ted Williams hit a home run in the final at bat of his career.

10,500 Fenway fans applauded for four minutes, hoping for a tip of the cap that never came. Despite all of their cheering, he never forgave them for their booing.

“To hell with them,” he said.

In 1952, while pitching for the Class-D Bristol Twins, “thrower” Ron Necciai struck out 27 batters in a nine-inning no-hitter against the Welch Miners.

The Miners did record one groundout, but a dropped third strike that allowed a runner to reach in the 9th opened the door for strikeout 27.

Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale once staged a joint holdout ahead of the ‘66 season and hired a business manager in one of the first major labor movements in baseball history, asking for a three-year, $1 million package for the two of them.

It ultimately made them both the first $100,000 pitchers.

The Perfect Game that never was…

In 1959, Harvey Haddix threw 12 PERFECT innings. 36 up, 36 down. The problem was, despite 12 hits, his Buccos couldn’t muster a run.

In the bottom of the 13th — after an error and an intentional walk to Hank Aaron — Joe Adcock drove in the game-winning run…

Working my way through this book today and it’s an absolutely phenomenal piece, vividly reliving some of those most magical moments and stories in baseball history.

Highly, HIGHLY suggested for any baseball fan.

A true nomad: Frank Huelsman

Huelsman cracked Major League Baseball in 1897, playing two games.

In 1904, a rookie at 30 years old…

• 4 GP for Chicago
• 4 GP for Detroit
• 20 GP for St. Louis
• 84 GP for Washington.

He played 121 games for Washington in 1905 and that was it.

Ed Delahanty was one of the most feared hitters of his era.

From 1888- 1903, his 522 2B were 110 more than the next best, his 101 HR were third-most, all with a career BA of .346.

Tragically and mysteriously, his body was found in Niagara Falls after being removed from a train for drunkenness.

In 1884, Old Hoss Radbourn threw 73 complete games and posted a 59-11 record, a wins record that will never be broken, alongside a 1.38 ERA.

It was the first year of overhand pitching. Twirlers stood in a pitching box 50 feet from home and both feet had to remain on the ground.

It’s very funny, you stumbled upon Jennings the same way I did the first time - I was searching for which teams had been HBP the most times and the 1890’s Orioles littered the leaderboard. I dove into the rabbit hole and it led me to one of the best books I’ve ever read.

No one has ever been HBP more than Hughie Jennings (287)

He was once hit in the head, finished the game, and fell unconscious for three days. He fractured his skull diving into an empty pool. He fractured it again in a car accident.

He played 18 years, finished law school and managed for 19 years.

Juan Pierre? Carl Crawford?

From 2004-2006, no one swiped more bags than Scott Podsednik

Javonte Williams finished today’s game with -2 rushing yards on 8 carries.

It was only the 10th time that a running back has finished a game with negative rushing yards on 8+ carries since 2000, most recently happening when Josh Jacobs rushed 9 times for -2 yards on 9/17/23.

Seven rookies in baseball history have played at least 100 games and post an OPS above 1.000.

Three of them played before the ROTY award existed, three of them won ROTY, one of them was Bernie Carbo.

He hit .310 with a 1.004 OPS, a 164 OPS+, 21 home runs and 19 doubles over 125 games in 1970.
