My old friend Dalton, brilliant illustrator, kindest friend, has died. It’s so sad, I’m so sad, as are so many people. The first thing anyone says, whether they knew him 30 years ago or today, is how kind he was — what an amazing legacy. Lots of love to his family and all his loved ones 💔

HE EMINATED WARMTH AND CONSIDERATION. WE BECAME FRIENDS THAT MOMENT. WE WERE BOTH IN OUR MID 2OS AND OBSESSED WITH COMICS. BACK IN SEATTLE, DALTON JOINED THE COMIX GROUP / WAS PART OF. HE WAS HARD OF HEARING. I LEARNED A LOT ABOUT HOW TO COMMUNICATE SO HE COULD READ MY LIPS. EVEN WHEN WE COULDN'T TALK DUE TO CROWDS, WE HAD FUN JUST VIBING& COEX/STING. EVENTUALLY HE GOT A COCHLEAR IMPLANT. REMEMBER IT HELPED BUT CAME WITH ITS OWN CHALLENGES. HE WORKED ON A COMIC ABOUT IT. HE MADE LOTS OF COOL COMICS. HE WAS SO TALENTED. OVER THE NEXT MANY YEARS, DALTON & I HUNG OUT, SOMETIMES BY DESIGN AND SOMETIMES JUST IN THE SAME CIRCLES. DALTON WAS ALWAYS STYLISH AND DROVE A MOTORCYLE. HE WAS SUPER COOL. YEARS PASSED, DALTON FELL IN LOVE, GOT MARRIED, HAD A KID, AND MOVED TO A NEARBY CITY. I BECAME A HOMEBODY. I NO LONGER SAW HIM IN PERSON BUT KEPT UP ON SOCIAL MEDIA. I KEPT UP ON HIS POSTS SHARING HIS GORGEOUS 'KIDLIT' ILLUSTRATIONS. RECENTLY HE SHARED ABOUT THE KIDS BOOK HE DREW GETTING PUBLISHED! Voting ASAP! The last 2 times we voted by mail a few days before Election Day, our ballots were not received in time. Not taking chances this time. I saw a neighboring county say mailing even 1 week ahead was not enough time for USPS these days.

MY MEDICAL DEBT STORY BY TATIANA GILL I GOT SOBER IN 2009. THE STRESS MADE MY BAD ECZEMA FLARE TO A FULL-BODIED BLOODBATH, INCLUDING MY HAIR FALLING OUT. MY INSURANCE COVERED UVB TREATMENT. I WENT A FEW TIMES A WEEK AND IT HELPED A LOT. A FEW WEEKS INTO MY TREATMENT, MY EMPLOYER CHANGED INSURANCE POLICIES. I ASSUMED IT WAS COMPARABLE. A FEW MONTHS LATER I REALIZED MY TREATMENTS WEREN'T BEING COVERED. MY BILL WAS FOR TENS OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS. I WAS LAID OFF FROM MY JOB. THE MENTAL ILLNESS / HAD IN THE WAKE OF SOBRIETY WAS OVERWHELMING. THE BILL REMINDERS PILED UP. WHEN I DIDN'T PAY UP, THE MEDICAL CENTER SOLD MY BILL TO A DEBT COLLECTION AGENCY, THEY SENT ME A LETTER SAYING THEY WERE TAKING ME TO COURT. TERRIFIED, I SET UP A PAYMENT PLAN FOR SANALL MONTHLY INSTALLMENTS - MOSTLY PAYING INTEREST. I WAS PERPETUALLY UNDEREMPLOYED WITH NO CREDIT. I WAS IN A CONSTANT STATE OF PANIC OVER SEVERAL THINGS INCLUDING THIS DEBT. I REACHED A CRISIS POINT INCLUDING SUICIDAL IDEATION. MY BOYFRIEND HELPED ME PAY OFF THE DEBT. OTHERWISE I MIGHT STILL BE PAYING IT. THE DAY IT WAS PAID OFF, IT FELT LIKE WEIGHTS HAD BEEN TAKEN OUT OF MY SHOES! IN RECENT YEARS, IVE LEARNED THAT MEDICAL PROVIDERS SELL DEBTS LIKE MINE TO COLLECTION AGENCIES FOR PENNIES ON THE DOLLAR! THAT WHOLE ORDEAL DIDN'T EVEN SUPPORT THE CLINIC THAT HEALED ME! FROM UNDUEMEDICAL DEBT. ORG: OVER 100 MILLION PEOPLE IN THE U.S. ARE STRUGGLING WITH MEDICAL DEBT, OWING AT LEAST $200 BILLION COLLECTIVELY. NEARLY 1/2 OF U.S. ADULTS STRUGGLE TO AFFORD HEALTHCARE COSTS.

My neighbor had been growing “Teddy Bear” sunflowers and they are so dang cool.
I don’t love the texture colored pencils give me. Then I discovered there are colored pencil colorless blenders, and tried that for this drawing. I like the result much better!
