Qui-Gon took Anakin in after his mom died when he was 9. Obi-Wan, at first, is not very happy about the thought of having a little "brother", but soon grows fond of Anakin who tries so hard to impress him.

Vader is just a clone, a backup plan, in case Anakin fails Palpy.... Which he does in the last second. Just before he kneels, Anakin thinks of Obi-Wan and his teachings. So Palpy locks him up and sends his clone to fulfill his dirty plan in the temple and on Mustafar.
