My trans girl struggled in middle and high school. David busted the doors open for everyone in LGBTQ/adjacent, neurodiverse, and alternative groups. He lived with full joy and showed so many of us how to be there for ourselves and others. David, we will live and miss you always ❤️❤️❤️

Please donate to their care! 2 baby mountain lion cubs crouched together. 3 cubs were orphaned by a speeding car and rescued by CDFW and MidPeninsula Open Space (Bay area). These are probably the 2 boys, Spruce and Thistle (the other is a girl named Fern). Oakland Zoo gave them their names and will take care of them for a few months. ❤️❤️❤️

The previous Saturday at 6am, one of our redwoods flung itself down into our living room. We think a secondary leader split off. Astonishingly little damage due to luck and Xmas prep clearing up the room. Drama, though!

A warehouse of ripening parmigiana reggiano cheeses. A very bad place to be in an earthquake: Each cheese is placed on wooden shelves that can be 24 cheeses high by 90 cheeses long or 2,160 total wheels per aisle side. Each cheese and the shelf underneath it is then cleaned manually or robotically every seven days, and the cheese is turned. The average Parmigiano Reggiano wheel is about 18–24 cm (7–9 in) high, 40–45 cm (16–18 in) in diameter, and weighs 38 kg (84 lb). So that’s 4,320 cheeses on each side of the aisle, at ~84lbs, or 181 TONS of cheese available to crush you, per aisle. Per Wikipedia

Reportedly only 1-2 students took the uni up on this “check-out option”, which might mitigate future consequences but gets you immediately suspended and makes it quick and easy to arrest you in the future.

2 mature male elephant seals engaged in dominance battle. They’re reared up with their heads thrown back and their redonkulously long nasal appendages are dropped deep into their throats to amplify the great gargling noises they make to intimidate their opponents. The lower fangs of each seal are visible, and the seal on the left has been bloodied, which emphasizes the details of neck/throat skin scars from previous lunge-and-slash battles. These bad boys weigh many hundreds of pounds and have a unique talent for humping down the beach at speed, before rearing back like dancing poodles & hurtling their chests forward at their opponents. Deep dull slaps of blubber slapping against blubber are sometimes inaudible due to the deep throat gargling, and only the most dedicated elephant seal biologist could look away as their fangs rip at each others thick necks. Some day, I’ll tell the tale of what Stanford’s biologists discovered when they first went out the lighthouse keepers cottage.

That big black rectangle on the left is the tailgate of a cybertruck. It’s parked next to my blue Leaf (135k miles) and my SO’s VW id4. It’s so ridiculously huge! A side view of a CyberTruck who had the poor taste to park in a row of reasonable EVs. The owner was a tall slim athletic guy, who looked like a little boy getting into his monster truck. CT potential purchasers need very big mirrors so they can see how ridiculous their $100,000 cars make them look.

I had colander failure: my holes were too big for 40%. Then I used a smaller one and was excited at how visible the moon’s bite was….until I realized some of the holes weren’t completely punched thru the plastic.

Tree leaves on the street were the best sign.

I think everybody wore linen. The finest of the flax plant can make beautiful soft threads and drapey clothes. Coarser for peasants; fairly long-wearing.

Ah, thank you, what a fabulous inktvis! I got to a small aquarium museum just at inktvis-feeding time for a huge Giant Pacific Octopus and spent an hour being dazzled by his beauty and intelligence.
An arm (or 2 or more?) of an orange-ish Giant Pacific Octopus, coiling around with lots of bulls-eye-looking suction cups visible. The octopus (or inktvis if you’re Dutch) was working hard to remove the top of a puzzle toy where his food was hidden. It took him a long time and we had a wonderful time watching him. At the Port Townsend/Fort Worden aquarium on a little pier in the Admiralty inlet area. His name was Sylvia. Yes he was a guy named Sylvia.

Birds of the day: male and female hooded mergansers paddling up stream
In the background, behind some branches, there is a male hooded merganser, a small type of duck. His crest is down but you can still see the big splotch of white running from behind his eye to the back of his head. Ohohoh! I found my first parked CyberTruck in the wild. And it’s raining. And I have a box of rock salt in my bag (to make blueberry ice cream!). I could just leave the box on top of the “truck” as a present, couldn’t I??

(A bright yellow slug found only in California, generally in redwood forests)
A California banana slug happily crawling through a redwood forest on its own trail of slime. This one is showing its 2 upper eye stalks (which will be withdrawn instantly if it perceives a threat), and one of its lower “eyes”, which functions more like a nose in sensing its environment. I thought of you this morning when I was describing how Tesla CyberTrucks look like super-sized toys, and I expect to see super-sized Fisher-Price Little People driving them. How fun it would be if some skilled photo editor could pop a CyberTruck into one of the Little People ads…
