Fushimi Inari Taisha is such an amazing place. I really enjoy taking my time to examine all the shrines and see the differences between the kitsune plus the objects they hold. More about that in the alt text.
A kitsune holding a key in its mouth. These keys represent the keys to the rice graineries, a source of life and prosperity. At Inari shrines, foxes are traditionally understood as messengers of Inari Ōkami, a kami (God) associated with rice, prosperity, and, in modern life, the well-being of businesses and households. The kitsune stand guard, often in pairs, symbolizing a link between people and the kami. This kitsune holds a ball or tama (jewel) in it's mouth which is a symbol of spirit and power. You may also have noticed the votive cloths (red bibs) the kitsune wear. Red carries protective connotations and these cloths are often offered in thanks for answered prayers. This kitsune holds a rice sheaf in its mouth. Think Inari sushi and you will see this is the most direct representation of Inari's rice and agriculture roots. Rice sheaves reinforce the connection to agriculture and fertility. Lastly, you can see the kitsune on the left holds a scroll in its mouth. A scroll indicates wisdom and divine messages.
