LIKES: MUSIC (I play flutes, 7-string nylon guitar, and sing dreadfully); also LANGUAGES (En, Fr, Cat, Es) and the Great Outdoors - as long as it's not raining.
DISLIKES: Mud
Olive growing throughout the South of France was widely abandoned after the terrible frost of Feb 1956. Odd that it should make a comeback 🤔

Google "Gboard" on Android handles this pretty well. You declare the languages you want to use and can switch between them, manually or automatically.

My favourite tree in l'Escala. It's been like this for years - and I've just noticed they removed part of the seawall to let it sleep in comfort. But surely it just needs a few drops of Baby Bio? 🤔

With Black Friday upon us (yes, I know it's Saturday!) it's interesting to read about scam sites set up just to exploit it. And I think I just bumped into one! There are ~50 products on this page and every one is shown as $112 reduced to $45! Every single one!

Ooh ! Any good? Pukka tucker? Oddly enough, I've had a couple of promo emails from them recently - surprising for an enterprise booked out a year ahead. The latest is for some kind of equestrian event (in which I gather you don't get to eat the horses🤔)

Ooh, didn't know that one! I like the way it has a Gascon equivalent as well ("harai", with their famous aspirated H). Presumably, this is via the Val d'Aran.

A 2.5K mono-split we are about to fit to replace a 20-year old one. In France, "Daikin" used to be supreme, but Chinese "Heiwa" seem to be taking over. Our supplier has switched over entirely, and claims they haven't had a single return. EUR ~1000 with mounting accessories. Wifi included. Pukka R32.

The Bafang BBS series is "the people's motor" because they left the firmware open. Sadly, newer models are locked down, but replacement parts for old models work as before. So I've just hacked mine to make the power curve "mostly road-legal", ie <250W. Only levels 8/9 are OTT and I won't use them 😐

Allbran és diferent, oi ? Parlem de Shredded Wheat "Bitesize"?

Village life. We played some live music in a basket-weaving festival in 2023. A lovely event, organised by a Catalan-accented club that did nothing but basket weaving! Sadly, it has just fizzled out and tonight was their "last supper". And before you ask, a Banasta is a Cistell without a handle 🤔

An ordinary looking roll of irrigation pipe, but special inside! The water leaks out through holes, but on the way, passes through a labyrinth that slows the flow and aims to equalise the distribution. Hoping to use it for an aircon project, to spread the condensate evenly along a garden hedge.🤔

A new one on me! A machine that dispenses candy floss (barbe à papa). Wave a bank card near this and you could be happy for a good 5 minutes 🤔

Autumn in the Pays Catalan doesn't have the riotous colours of New England. Leaving aside the planes and the vines, many trees are either evergreen or shed their leaves late - some even in February. But it's still a pleasant time of year, with the crushing Summer heat replaced by soft sunshine.

I get such odd requests for 3D modelling and printing. How stupid is this one ? A SINK PLUG that you might find in your corner shop - except the dimensions would be wrong. This way, you get the right size, even of the quality is worse. Modelled in OpenSCAD & printed in TPU with 15% gyroidic infill.

"Seua" is pretty rare here! I gather it's standard in València and the Balearics. Example here:

There are so many regionalisms like this! You mention "noranta" (90). In France, that is sometimes heard as "quatre vint deu"! It suspected to be a consequence the "parlez français, soyez propres" era, but it's not 100% clear: other cultures also use the "four score and ten" construction🤔

Some of the rooms are quite charmingly eccentric, but what on earth is going on with this one?! That ceiling. And the 'caganer' on the shelf ?

If your old hi-fi dies, it's probably the electrolytic capacitors. These are needed to get big capacitance in small volumes, but their lifetimes (esp at high temperatures) are shockingly low, sometimes only 1000 hours! Aluminium Polymer seems to be one answer. I just needed one - but had to buy 50🙁

A tiny Catalan grammar thing. This Manuel de Pedrolo short story has lots of examples of LLUR, the possessive "their", which in modern Catalan has largely given way to SEU.
But LLUR is still popular in the North, because it matches the French LEUR and the Occitan LOR.
(OK, I'll see myself out🙁)

Is this normal? By the time you've carried the baguette back home, it's significantly shorter? 🤔

A quick plug for KAGI which I started subscribing to recently! One of the "cleanest" browsers / search engines around, with some surprising extras: a choice of competing AI models + a translate facility providing alternative translations and commentary on the nuances. Better then Google IMHO!

Agreed - but these publications are separate from the normal subscription newspaper. Here's a example page which contains info on Exchange Rates you would struggle to find elsewhere: a distillation of the law itself, plus government answers to questions and evolved custom and practice.

I should confess that I do get some help from the Connexion guide" It's in English - which is unnecessary from my POV - but it does a good job of breaking down and simplifying the logic, plus documenting custom and practice. Well worth it !

Is it OK to leak Copper into the ecosystem ? CU does occur naturally and is seen in some lakes and water courses, but it's probably not great. Roebic, makers of the popular commercial alternative, proudly claim their product is CU-free! OTOH theirs contains Dichlobenil, explicitly banned in the EU 🤔

We have a cracked sewage line and tree roots have got in. It's under a public roadway, so I can't repair it myself and Veolia won't fix it - just clear it whenever we report it blocked. So I dose it with copper sulphate every 4 months, at night for dramatic effect (and cos toilets/sinks are quiet) 🙄
