Both of them were fairly experienced and eager to show off, though they were also testing each other. An enjoyable romp, regardless.

Gnash knew a few offensive spells, enough to hold his own in a tavern brawl, but otherwise he was just... a bard. Combat wasn't a part of his daily life, and while he was aware of the potential of the bardic arts in battle, he had no reason to use it himself.
Clearly that's changed.

I haven't worked out the details yet, but I like to think they find a way to make Gnash's mortal lifespan a non-issue.

Loumont's mother was a Wood Wailer, until she could no longer carry her lance. It was losing her that caused him to leave his forest home and make the trek to Ul'dah, that he might better his skills with a blade and at least throw his life away with some honor as a gladiator or adventurer.
