Andrew makes an interesting point.
I would suggest that one of the reasons that The Who’s artistry was so emphatically CLEAR on the macro and micro levels owes to Townsend’s strong conceptual art initiatives and postures.
The most convoluted conceptual undertakings, like Lifehouse, never came out.

The thing about The Who is that Pete Townshend is one of the best pop songwriters of his generation, but one of the most confused and incoherent conceptual artists, and too often he lets the conceptual artist overrule the pop songwriter.
