The start of October, before the wind & rain dashed all the leaves to the ground.
A forest of mixed conifers & deciduous stretch back to a horizon of puffy white clouds against a light blue sky. The trees are a mix of dark green with poplars all in golden yellow leaves.

A male Pileated Woodpecker was enthusiastically hollowing out a would be sleeping cavity.
A woodpecker with a brilliant red crest and moustache, has a black band stretching from the eye to the back of it's head. The feathers on it's back are a glossy black, the breast feathers a matte black with slightly lighter edges. The bird hangs off of a tree trunk with it's considerable bill poised in front of a dark hole in the silvery grey wood.

#Birds #WoodpeckerWednesday A female Three Toed Woodpecker patiently flicking off pieces of bark in her search for overwintering insects. Of all the woodpeckers that frequent my area, these are the quietest. They don't drill holes but pry off pieces of bark on dead/dying trees.
A black & white woodpecker with many stripes on both the back and breast feathers, sits on thick branch. It has a thin white ring around the eye and a thin white moustache marking below. The branch has a bit of snow beneath the bird. In front of the bird, reddish areas where the bark has been pried off.

Looking for some warm colours on a sub zero day, I came across these.
A log with the bark peeled off, exposing the insect trails in the orange coloured wood. The pattern is somewhat reminiscent of the Nazca lines in Peru. A Conch (fungi) sticks out from rough bark. The outermost grooved ring/edge of the conch is a deep orange, the next ring is a chocolate brown, and the innermost section a dirty looking tan. Nestled in the fork of two branches, partially covered by dead brown leaves; the folds of a bright orange fungi.

2 days ago, morning dense fog, burned off early afternoon. #Frost followed as soon as the sun hit it.
Frosty weeds in a field. Top of frame is dark shadows. Below frosted weeds backlit by the sun. Mid frame, heavy to the right, dark brown Common Burdock. Bright red, frosty wild rose hips against a background of blurred green pine boughs. A fragment of insect web hangs from a branch. The web is frosted white, against a grey background. The branch has peeling bark, a bit of brown at one end and an outline of frost on it's upper edge. Heracleum maximum aka Cow Parsnip. What was the flowerhead that held seeds is now bare branches with clusters of frosty little fingers reaching up. The background is dark twigs & branches against grey.

#TwosDay A Mallard drake leads the way for American Wigeon ducklings. The Wigeon hen had disappeared; fox dinner? For a little over 3 weeks the Wigeon ducklings stuck with the very patient Mallard. Following his cues, they learned the best spots to eat, when to take cover and, just be ducks.

#Birds #Ducks #Mallards Not the sharpest focus but, I was happy to see Mr. Blue, the Mallard with the chalky blue bill, who I've been observing for the past 3 seasons. He was trying to nap on the bit of open water surrounded by ice, just as the sun went down. His lady friend was just as sleepy.

Friday's #flyday subject is a Rufous Hummingbird female, taken last summer in my backyard.

It's another frosty -5C (23F) this morning. Really hoping for some sun before the forecasted winds blow in.
