I came close to writing a hatchet job once, writes Declan Fry. I was amused, confused and a little disturbed by how popular the piece became. Criticism should offer more than a cut-throat execution.

It’s absurd and embarrassing in a liberal democracy to have to say this, but people shouldn’t be punished for protesting against genocidal oppression, or speaking about it.
So many cultural institutions have done this very thing though - and damaged themselves in the process.

Sad that @kydmagazine.bsky.social will no longer be a publishing partner or judge in the SLQ Young Writers Award as we believe in supporting early-career writers but we reject political interference and censorship of the library's award processes and have to call it out.
No to censorship in our cultural institutions. A statement of support for black&write!

KYD commissioned me to take a look back on The Book Club (2006 - 2017) and what I found was a long storied history of film, book and cultural criticism on ABC TV, but a complete dearth of that sort of coverage today, when it should be easier and cheaper to make than ever.
ABC TV’s 'First Tuesday Book Club' brought the literary salon to Australian television screens. Seven years since it was taken off the air, Sam Twyford-Moore uncovers what we’re missing in the absence of regular televised arts criticism.
