but America is in fact a police state with the highest incarceration rate in the world, a booming private prison industry, and among the highest rate of death by cop. Not to mention the people in prison who are murdered and raped by other inmates and correctional officers in prisons.

No ideological consistency. Just whatever serves his interests in the moment. But this is a miscalculation on his part. The 2A is extremely important to a huge portion of his cult. If he thinks he can take away our guns without an ounce of resistance from his own supporters, he is sorely mistaken.
It was always obvious that if Trump faced a choice between protecting his dictatorship and protecting the 2nd Amendment, he'd toss out the 2nd Amendment.
