115. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
This film went places I would not expect for a Marvel film!! Probably the only Marvel film that to me that isn't purely entertainment, and much more interesting because of it
I was really curious about this movie ever since it showed in cinemas cuz people kept saying it was Really Good. Which didn't compute in my mind, with my mostly lukewarm impression of Black Panther 1 and the fact it was a post-Endgame marvel movie, which is when I was fully checked out of Marvel; checked out enough to have not even seen Infinity War nor Endgame at that point. Yet people were saying one of them is good?? So, in 2025, I finally got around to seeing it. And uh-huh, mhm...yeah, this was good! It sure has stretches that have the usual MCU irreverence, and sometimes it's even funny when doing so, which is kind of a good pace breaker (for a nearly 3 hour movie) from the real meat of the film, which is both a genuine tribute to the passed actor for T'challa, and genuinely dives into the headspace of rage and grief that losing someone can put someone in. While for the Wakandans, their grieving is simply buried and sometimes denied by forces outside of their control, namely the dicey political landscape they've waded into by going public and the responsibilities of leading a nation, I thought it was compelling that such messy feelings were paralleled by the people of Atlantis and Namor's lived experience of seeing his entire nation and people forced into hiding, and seeing that the people left on the surface face slavery and worse, which of course, basically mirrors Wakanda. While the way things shake out is "hurt people hurt people" as hardlining with-me-or-against-me attitudes result in mostly boring CGI war scenes that go on too long, it's not like such stories aren't rooted in truth, and somehow, in a Marvel film of all things, I felt I could empathize somewhat with the rage-filled sorrow that Shuri and Namor express, looking out at the world and feeling like violence is the only solution, and it didn't feel hamfisted or insincere. Kinda incredible!! I applaud! While the turn to mercy at the end is a bit sudden, the ending gave enough room to breathe to let go of all of that tension, and feel like there's room to move on from that dark place. Not a world changing movie or anything...but a pretty incredible tribute and therapy session.

I like this one alright! I can't help but wish the uh, messaging I guess, went harder, but the imagination that goes into the CGI'd city and costume designs to feel like? future techno african?? is pretty neat
I'm not gonna pretend I know much about black american politics, the little I do know only reveals the decades (a few centuries?) of history and thought I haven't learned about, but while this movie at least acknowledges that America the empire is fucked up, it still falls back on thinking "we're here and we're visible" is enough. Still...that's more than you'll get from MCU movies in general, so it's something, especially from a movie studio that's as mainstream as you can get these days. And the inspiration to say "we're here and we're visible" does ultimately come from the villain, so, the viewpoint isn't totally refuted. Okay okay but like, the movie itself? It's a Marvel movie, man. It IS pretty cool that the movie's aesthetics, characters, etc. are all African inspired...as far as I can tell...so much so to the point that of the good guys, we've got One, 1, just one token white guy, who's treated with a fair amount of comedy relief. One of the things I like the most about art and storytelling is seeing different perspectives, even if I don't understand everything implicitly or explicitly, and, shallowly or not, I feel like this movie does do that a little bit, to the point where if I were a little boy, born with dark skin, seeing a mainstream movie filled with black people talking like that, I'd be obsessed with the movie for a good few years. From what I remember of when this movie was released, that actually did happen, so that's really really cool, and in my estimation, makes this one of the most worthwhile Marvel films.

utilizes the literal power of his "parables", meant to teach lessons about reality, about "the way things are", against the party, in trying to drill reality into them, which, for "fictional" beings, literally would just be death to them. Renoir only sees fiction and art as a way to communicate, to impart lessons. painted!Verso on the other hand, is literally a fictional version of the dead son the Dessendres are grieving over, and has done his time in the world, living an entire lifetime among the vivid imagination of the soul of his real counterpart, while also losing and suffering at the hands of what the warring, grieving parents paint into the world. While I don't think he explicitly aimed to give Maelle the relationship, the bond she was denied because of the fire, he gives it anyway, and treats the party like they're real, letting them learn about themselves, experience joy, connection, all the things that make life worth living. Whether he intended it or not, I believe he shows how fiction can save lives. It's not an uncommon phenomenon for someone to play a JRPG as a kid, become completely obsessed with it, internalize a more optimistic personality and warmer disposition, meet people through mutual like of said video game, and life a richer (and maybe literally longer) life because of it. Because games like this, like the fiction of Act I and II, do matter. They're crucial reminders that things can be better, and it's better to fight for a better tomorrow, and to cultivate relationships. It's only when you bury your head too deep into the fiction, and not take anything positive from the fiction into the real world, where fiction can turn from life giving to the opposite. And the fact that it's painted!Verso that tries to unbury Maelle's head from the painting that makes this point even more powerful and true. It's the painting itself staring back at Maelle and saying she needs to go touch grass, to stop staring at the painting, to move on, that staying long… alarm in the morning, from talking to Renoir and her mom in reality, from beginning to heal and see a future beyond this grief, because continuing to absorb herself in Verso's painting is only playing at pretend that Verso is still alive at this point. Which isn't to say that a painting like this cannot be a positive in the family's life in hard times, when remembering Verso might bring them strength - but drowning themselves in tears about it won't help if you can't sniff and run out of tears. That's why I love both endings. Verso's ending is a glimpse at life at the first steps of moving on. Beginning to see the expeditions and Lumiere in the rear view mirror. We fought a damn good fight. It's time to move on, to do what we can in our reality, with our cruel limitations and scant power. And while Maelle's ending is happy for everyone in the painting, all sorrows turned to happy endings, losses reverted, and even if we can derive contentment rising our dead from the grave...painted!Verso expresses such a powerful and deep tiredness and resignation from this song (literally) and dance. It'll all art, literally, just for the purpose of playing dolls with the memory of people who can no longer hold us, and even masterpieces get old after enough time, stagnating our brains and souls. It's the same trap the old paintress fell into, and Maelle has fallen into it too. Whether we like it or not, we've got to move on. No one can paint forever. E33 is absurdly beautiful for illustrating all that and more in tones that reached as many as it does. The fact that there are people on Reddit that genuinely cannot comprehend how it makes sense that Maelle's ending has bad undertones speaks to the power of both endings, and the allure of endless escapism to some people. Unfortunately, I watched Gurren Laggan as a teenager, so I can't empathize with mindsets that would see the appeal in completely abandoning your current life for a fictional life where the worst thing that happens … you and your creations, but the power of E33 is that it makes me honestly understand it a little. After all, Maelle's ending is one in which we could see the rest of Gustave's skill tree. That would be sick as fuck. God I haven't even MENTIONED how I love the battle system and how I'm a hopeless parry enjoyer. How Expert mode straddles the line between allowing you juust enough mistakes to push me to really experiment and understand the systems and how doing that is Fun. How hype the final superboss Simon is and how really, seriously detail oriented the world is, filling in blanks in the backstory/lore of the expeditions if you pay attention, and the same for the Dessendres and their involvement in the evolution of the painting. And that the game knows how to be fucking funny when it wants to. Funnier than so many games that try harder to be funny. And DUDE...stellar voice performances, to the point where the game avoids the singular line delivery with slightly too long pauses between lines that plague other games in this genre. Characters talk OVER each other sometimes. That fact alone is genuinely astonishing for a game with so many JRPG trappings. Speaking of JRPG trappings: fucking love that there's an overworld. Overworlds are cool. Bring Them Back So far, I'm pretty sure I can confidently put E33 forward as my GOTY. Genuinely didn't think it would actually be actually This good, I kinda thought it would be more crowd please-y. And yeah sure, it kinda is with likeable characters and a smooth gameplay progression (and I'm sure it's way more forgiving when not playing on Expert) and it has AAA video game climbing handholds (thankfully contextualized in the game) but it doesn't feel like such things are put in because it'd please crowds, it's all in service to the vision. AAA video game climbing handholds do let you set up grand vistas and break up semi linear hallways after all, no one wants to play another FFXIII. I'm so glad I did eventually get around to this game, it is, unfortunately to my slight hipster tendencies, deserving of its glowing praise. We continue...

Full spoilers for this, it takes a full view of this game to talk about what I wanna talk about for this game. E33 is a monumental achievement in my mind, to present such a compelling question at the end that frames everything you've experienced in cerebral and deeply emotional contrasts, to bring people wildly different takeaways, to mean different things to different people. And also, the game is rock solid throughout, from beginning to end. Rarely is a turn based JRPG paced so well, without dragging its feet, letting its scope get away from itself, or letting the battle system just plain get old, and ALSO serving as a feast for the senses, with corners cut only in places that don't detract at all from the intended experience. This game is 100% worth playing if you haven't and the premise, story or gameplay, interests you even a little, even if the hype puts you off, even if the internet discourse on release soured you, even if popular trendy games aren't your thing. Last warning for spoilers! Acts I and II are so goddamn good. There's something so good about likeable characters being thrust into unfamiliar, harsh, yet beautiful environs. It's the appeal of Xenoblade 1 for me, and E33 does everything right to make the premise, world, and characters work with the mystery and goal of the Paintress and gommage, the immediate naturalness of the main characters, very strong and efficient "show don't tell" at the beginning, and the dire tone on starting the Expedition. All while that's going on, the cast slowly grows, the tone gets lighter, the Continent becomes more familiar, legit exploring is happening, then... Act II. It's really crazy what they do to make you like Gustave, make him feel like the glue holding everyone together, give him a super cool protagonist aura attack, locking most of his skill tree to make you think of future story developments...and nah, he's gone. What's even crueler is how someone could keep thinking "ah well, sure we'll bring him back" signposted by a few systems: the fact that there were locked nodes on the skill tree, that when you get the final party member you're one short of two full party lineups, and hey, he was the POV character we started with, it'd be hype to bring him back, JRPGs are guilty of cheesy hype very often. But reaching the end of Act II and beyond it really starts to sink in...no, he's gone. We really did say goodbye to him. This tension is one of the many great narrative tricks the game does to make the final themes hit hard, even for people who've never experienced loss, because it makes you experience it twofold in the narrative and systems. The really cool thing I love about the Act II to Act III transition is that it does a lot to make the game and narrative feel vastly different, in ways that further what the game's about. In Acts I and II, the setting feels relatively grounded because the setting is real to the characters. Life and death matters, the world is full of unexplained mystery and danger, and you get the sense that generations have come and gone without "piercing the veil". The world is full of people like us, struggling, not making sense of much, and trying to be, to exist. Then, Act III lets us "pierce the veil". Massive truths are revealed, and everything you see is more or less explainable now. You can fly to anywhere, everywhere you can see now, instead of looking up and wondering what's beyond your reach. And, most importantly to me, the damage cap is lifted. All stopgaps to exploring and getting to truly know the world's every nook and cranny is lifted, and while most of it kicks your ass at the start, it doesn't make much to reach levels of power that could only be dreamed of at the peak of Act II, back when the world was harsh and beautiful, when things seemed realer. Because now we know...we're in a painting, which throws off everything we've come to understand and experience up til now...right? Speaking as Lune and Sciel, absolutely, although they chose to focus on the threat in front of them that's already wiped out almost everyone they know, so like, understandbly they won't have much to think about it yet. But for us? Does knowing that the story of E33's Act I and II are in-universe in a supernatural/living painting really change what we think about it, what we felt? Put a pin in that. Either way, Act III's freedom and largely optional nature changes the feel of the game; not in a better or worse way, but a different way to illustrate our changed relationship with the world. To us, E33 in Act III becomes less a story, a linear adventure where we're pulled from point to point with limited optional curiosities littering the way, meant to suck us into a fiction...and it starts to feel more "video game-y", where the focus of number go up and player curiosity drives the experience, because its at this point our understanding and relationship to the world has changed. We're more aware of the world's nature as a construct, and similarly, the way we progress and see more of the world is changed, more like the construct it is, as "more video game and lore". It's in the ending choice where the game pulls its final rug pull, forcing you to make a decision about what actually matters, what these two halves of the game mean to you. Most importantly, despite the implicit feeling that Verso's ending is the better one, I feel that if it is, it's only slightly. What gets me most about the ending choice in the moment, before seeing either ending, you really do have to weigh the existence, the sentience, lives, of everyone in the painting vs. some family in grieving you don't actually know too much about it. From that alone, it's easy to see why people would pick Maelle as their first instinct. But my first instinct was Verso's ending. The angle I take is that the painting, while originally… expression of a boy's imagination, has been painted over many times by the Dessendre family's grief. It's shown everywhere, in all the details of the game, and even in the characters themselves. The world itself is drooping and frozen itself with grief, like a widow endlessly staring at a picture of their deceased loved one, remembering everything at once, all the joys of the past and all the emptiness of the present and crucially, no future set ahead of them, because what's a future even mean without them? A Jacob Geller video I watched mentions that even Lune and Sciel's character moments parallel what happens to the Dessendres, and it doesn't seem a coincidence to me that Gustave looks quite a bit like a cross between Verso and Renoir. Plus, a journal entry you find compares a truly good painting as both a mirror and a window. No matter what gets painted or created in the setting of Expedition 33, it's rooted back to the Dessedres and their grief over losing Verso in some way, and they've had a lifetime of painting and creating to create something new, to try to move on with new ideas, but they don't, they can't, not while they're here in this canvas, robbing this world of a potential future where there's a future worth looking forward to. I wasn't thinking of all of this when I made my choice, but I was absolutely thinking: Maelle is beginning to trap herself in the same way as the mother did. She deserves a chance to move on, to have a future. Crucially, while that's basically what Renoir's end goals was, the perspective of painted!Verso pulling her out of the painting vs. Renoir doing it has a lot, a lot of significance. Renoir outright says it in the final fight against him: we must accept things as they are, not how we want them to be. Renoir is dismissive of the power of imagination, of the potential healing of pretending to be somewhere else, someone else for a while, to explore things how they could be, not as they are. He

It's an okay to fine Marvel film (in my mind: popcorn flick, passable to actually funny attempts at humor, shit action but cool CG destruction of environments, enjoyable character dynamics, and if it's an actually good Marvel film there'll be a little swell in your heart at the selfless sacrifice bit, but I don't remember any Marvel film that's actually achieved that besides maaybe the first guardians movie), I feel personally vindicated that homophobic Mario's more or less retired at the end of the film, I like that Rocket has a backstory but dislike how he's fridge'd for most of the film (but I do like that the crew will fling themselves at corpos to save Rocket cuz same), I like how at least this film isn't self serious and the Guardians are selfless heroes at the end of the day still, and while the whole supercharged eugenics thing could have easily been explored much more deeply, at least the villain behind it all is unapologetically evil and even a little hammy about it cuz that's how freaks who subscribe to thinking along those lines really are at heart. Humor softly hits as much as it outright misses. That's kinda it...better than several hours of scrolling social media, but this wouldn't get me outta the home to the movie theater. I think Rocket's backstory coulda hit harder if current day Rocket had the chance to talk to Anybody about it, the only thing we get that I remember is like, him getting revenge on the villain and having a moment to himself before saving the bioengineered experiments/to-be-experimentee's, which, with everything else the movie's handling with the other subplots and character dynamics, I'm glad it got even that much, but c'mon man...

108. Fire Emblem Genealogy of the Holy War
First time playing this one, a real "fire emblem fan plays fire emblem for the first time" moment, and goddamn this game does stuff that I didn't imagine the series ever doing
Speaking as someone who's played most of the series in one way or another before this one, this one's wiild, a lot of stuff you can take for granted coming into any fire emblem is either Entirely Different or has its own philosophy that's basically different from other Fire Emblem games, to emphasize different things. Like, skills. Yeah yeah, we've got Astra, sure, but core gameplay concepts like criticals or doubling...are skills in this one! And outside of promotion or rings that take up inventory space, there's no way to get new skills. What you've got is what you stick with. In the more modern FEs, skills are something you pick from a wishlist and then lay out a route to get there, or just innate to the class you have, while FE4 decides it's largely mostly something to consider on a per character basis. Thankfully, the skill to double is relatively wildspread and it seems most mounted promotions grant it, and while crits are rarer, there are still killer weapons that comes with critting by themselves, and even then, the game kinda balances crits as nice bonuses rather than something that would REALLY help out right about now to get rid of this guy, etc. I illustrate this to say that I think skills being this way is part of what makes inheritance from the game's first generation of units to the second a pretty fun thought exercise, to consider when and where the child units appear in the second half of the game, what class they are, what'd come in handy and such. I followed a recommended pair-up guide for first time players, and when I started chapter 6 and saw the fruits of said pair up labors, I immediately started appreciating the logic. The pair ups granted the unmounted units the double EXP skill in a game where the unmounted units are likely to struggle with getting EXP and leveling up, and considering that said units only hit max level at about the same time as my mounted units in chapter 10...I can't imagine what my playthru woulda looked like with those units lagging behind, as at double EXP, they certainly were carrying their weight in combat potential, even if they couldn't hoof it across the map at the same rate as half of the army. And all of that is just skills...lots of other stuff is just Different, like inventory management, the balance of weapon weight within and between the weapon triangle, weapon repairs etc. And one of the most stark and impressive differences is map design. Usually in Fire Emblem, a map will be like, several villages and a mountain range, or even a single town, or a singular castle...but this game has maps cover maybe like half of an entire country. Maybe more. In one case, one chapter's map spans three countries (not the entire countries, but you gotta traverse the entire Y axis of one to get to another). That kind of scale feels insane to try to capture with SNES hardware, and while it's absolutely scaled down to like, a JRPG overworld version of the continent, you're still capturing castles that represent whole kingdoms and then hoofing it to the next one in the manner of a few turns. The thing that makes this structure work instead of being a slog that's only cool for a few chapters is that capturing each castle will bring new story developments, new enemy reinforcements, new objectives. This makes each chapter's empty space a surprise to be filled in with each step, and damn they do some neat surprises for a first playthrough, sometimes using space you can't possibly get to to demonstrate tragedy as enemies will slaughter entire allied squadrons. Even though it might as well be a cutscene, the fact it's happening in the same play space gives it a neat feeling that what you're doing in the gameplay really does have an impact to the world of this game. While you couldn't have saved those guys...maybe next time the chance for heroism is presented, you'll have a chance to (and you do sometimes!). It's a commitment to storytelling and setting up grandiose spectacle and idk, just makes each chapter feel like its own drama and gameplay space in equal measure, and while every fire emblem ideally has some chapters that accomplish the same goals, none of them do it as confidently and as grandly as FE4 does. It's really cool!! Of course, not everything about this game is great. While the maps are big and grand...the maps are big and grand. There's a lot of just moving characters around. The inventory system is great and makes you think harder about how to move items around and who'd benefit most from what...but to make the most of that system, you need to grind arena battles at the start of every chapter to get everyone a good lil' nest egg of funds. And I did glaze this game's commitment to storytelling inside the maps and all but...repeating the same non-player involved events on repeated playthroughs is probably repetitive. And I really think the Warp staff should've worked like it does in other games, to help get a dancer up with the mounted units to get a lot more use out of player phase, to shove someone in the middle of a Situation to enemy phase the fuck outta some enemy units, and all that fun stuff. I got to set up the dancer with a leg and knight ring and Leif with a Rescue staff for the last two chapters, and squeezing that much more movement outta my mounted juggernauts was Fun. More of that pls. I'm with all the clown wearing makeup FE fans wanting a remake of this game for massive aesthetic upgrades and potential rebalances of the game to make it even better now. This game deserves it.
