I've been seeing concept artists saying, "Oh, using AI to conceptualize an idea isn't a big deal" which, as an artist myself, I find insane. I don't really understand why artists would want to remove what I feel to be the most entertaining part of the creative process: weeding through possibilities.

What's depressing is how muddied the conversation has become, though there's value to that. Criticism is expected to generate pushback from fans and the industry at large doesn't seem to care. Activision, EA, and Ubisoft are all infamously abhorrent... but their games sell and dominate conversation.

I completely agree! Unfortunately I just think we're in the minority, though there's still hope if more people are made aware.

To me, E33 and Arc Raiders being successful in spite of AI use is proof the conversation around AI use needs to continue.

Blame Geoff and the voting jury comprised of major games journalists, they determine what makes something indie... and they're not interested in the indie space until it means dollar signs for them.

The responsibility falls on the game studio & director, their stance is commendable, but it feels like willful ignorance. If you're vehemently anti-AI and are outsourcing, you should communicate that clearly. It's especially egregious if people want to define E33's small team as auteurs.
