I didn't get past the PM's Forward because his"devastatingly simple" case for reform was a non-sequitur. And based the whole proposal for asylum cases on the under 40% that arrive by small boats. Surely the way to stop channel crossings is to give people in France a ferry ticket?

This ignores the fact they were citizens at the time, legal foundation was still in place, the right to citizenship post-Brexit was not as clear as it is in hindsight, and the chief EU Parliament Brexit spokesman was strongly supporting a new form of post-Brexit EU citizenship for UK pro-Europeans.

Reminder from 2016. "A Luxembourg liberal MEP, Charles Goerens, has proposed offering British citizens the option of retaining their EU citizenship for a fee." The idea was strongly backed by Guy Verhofstadt (EU Parliament spokesman on Brexit). Got extensive UK coverage. The delusion was EU stoked.
