Fascinating BBC doc from 1970 about the word of retail focussing on up and coming supermarket Tesco and a trad high street fixture - WHSmith. Oh for bookshop shelves that were as full as the ones in this show. youtu.be/qiSou0ndgxA

I love Christmas - it’s the only time of year you can scoff a crate of Easy Peelers and claim it’s “tradition”

Sad to see this news - I remember enjoying their LP very much when I stumbled across it back in the day and though they were well regarded, I don’t think they really got the credit they were due. There’s a track or two linked in this piece.

There’s not a Talk Talk song that I don’t love, but every time I hear “Call In the Night Boy”, I think it’s actually a song about a chap called Colin…

Dunno what radio is on at the blood donor place today but we’ve got ‘Only Love Can Break Your Heart” by Saint Étienne now five minutes after Edie Brickell. I assume somebody is rebelling against the normal Christmas music.

Blood Donor today - I’ve had the text telling me to drink loads of water - just hope that I don’t get the one about my appt being cancelled at short notice as well for the 3rd time running

I’m 12th out of 13 in my work Fantasy League and I’ve just noted that all 11 teams above me have Haaland in their side. As I said to somebody last week, I find that all rather unimaginative (as I make second to last my own)

I was surprised by this fire-making news because I thought nothing ever happened in Barnham - but it turns out there’s another Barnham and it’s not the one I thought of. Panic over.

“Alexa”, I said. “Play Sunday Morning”

So it did, by Mar00n Five. This is what’s wrong with technology. Bah.

Another one of those calls that looks like it’s coming from a UK mobile but when you answer it, you hear an automated message and the words “Indeed Human Resources” - I doubt it’s going to end up in a job opportunity for me.

Everyone should make their plans to survive a Reform government. Which for some of us will be harder than others. But if your first instinct is "collude" I hope you don't survive and I'll do my best to make sure you don't.

I can remember when it was a scandal if the 18 weeks wait figure dropped below 95%. It was only about 10-12 years ago.

The collapse in NHS performance under the last government was truly staggering, and went well beyond the pandemic.
New NHS England stats, via NHS Confederation:

"The total waiting list for procedures and appointments has dropped to 7.39 million in September, down from 7.41 million in August.

"The proportion of people waiting less than 18 weeks for care stood at 61.8% in September, up from 61.0% in August."

The official investigation into the January 6 riots concluded Trump “summoned the mob, assembled the mob, and lit the flame of this attack" in an effort to halt the peaceful transfer of power.

No billion dollar lawsuit can change reality.

The BBC should call this convicted criminal’s bluff.

Once every 20 years or so, the director-general of the BBC is forced to resign for being insufficiently rightwing. Alastair Milne in 1987. Greg Dyke in 2004. Tim Davie in 2025. The great irony is that the BBC was in all cases profoundly biased towards established power. But just not biased enough …
