As a parent or coach, the hardest moments come when you clearly see someone’s potential, yet they can't. You can’t force motivation—but you can plant seeds.

To get better, you have to struggle.

The way your body and mind learn, adapt, and grow is to be slightly embarrassed. That frustration is the signal that our brain/body needs to adjust.

If you want to learn and adapt, embrace the struggle.

Balance in life is BS. To achieve almost anything, there are periods where you have to go all-in and singularly focus on one thing. That's fine. The key is being able to step back when YOU choose to.

There is something about doing something real, that essentially smacks you in the face.

That reminds you that we all give in to fatigue at some point. That we all face doubts & insecurities. That we all want to quit.

Doing something real normalizes instead of idealizes.

We get confidence wrong.

Real confidence lies in understanding who you are & what you are capable of

It lies in being vulnerable, not delusional

Confidence is doing hard things, sometimes failing, but seeing where you lie & then going back to the work

Leadership simplified:

Hire good people.
Give them the tools to succeed.
Provide them the security to take calculated risks.
Get out of their way.
Let go of over-controlling.
Trust them to do their job.

Running helps create two skills that are increasingly rare:

1. When running by yourself, it helps create an ability to be alone inside of your head for a long time.
2. When running with others, you learn to fill time with conversation instead of defaulting to your phone.

90% of coaching is helping people get out of their own way.

Do you want to perform at your best? Get out of your own way. Ego, fear of failure, status anxiety, a focus on the external instead of the internal.

Coaching is not about prescribing and dictating.

It's about creating situations where the athlete is challenged to figure it out. You nudge them along, but if you always give them the answer, you aren't actually teaching. And they aren't learning.

Separate your identity from what you do

When you tie your identity too closely to what you do, anytime you fail at that thing, you will take it as a failure of your true self. It will not be that I failed at running. It will I am a failure

Short naps work:

-NASA found a twenty-five minute nap improved judgment by 35 percent and vigilance by 16 percent.
-Another study, found that ia 15-20min naps led to more alertness and better performance than drinking a cup of coffee.

Do Real Things

Our brain is predictive. It adjusts to its environment. If you feed it social media, news, and entertainment all day every day it starts to use that information to predict how to respond to the world.

Doing real things in the real world is your reset.

Recent research shows that seeking out discomfort leads to personal growth. It increases our motivation and our pursuit of goals.

Not just physical acts, but writing about difficult emotions, talking to others with opposing views, etc.

In a world of filters, spin, and curated narratives, sport is stubbornly real. You can’t fake it. The scoreboard doesn’t care about your “personal brand.” Physics doesn’t care about your story.

Don't Expect Things to Feel Good all the Time

Oftentimes, you don not need to feel good to get going, you need to get going to give yourself a chance at feeling good.

If I waited for motivation to exercise or write...I'd seldom do either. Get going.
