The only way you can find out how good you are is by giving yourself a chance.

Most of us excuse, rationalize, or give up before we've even give ourselves a shot.

Put yourself in position to do something. Don't obsess over whether it'll work out or not. Be there first.

As a parent or coach, the hardest moments come when you clearly see someone’s potential, yet they can't. You can’t force motivation—but you can plant seeds.

Here's what to do about it:

Learn how to lose. Learn how to disagree.

Not everything needs to be taken as if it's an attack on your beliefs/values/sense of self.

One valuable lesson sport provides is getting your butt kicked, even though you gave your absolute all. And being okay with that.

Things that don't build team cohesion:
-Role-playing like we're Navy SEALs
-Screaming, calling someone out

Things that actually build cohesion:
-Being able to be vulnerable & real without fear of reprisal
-Work towards a shared meaningful goal
-Real conversations
-Truly caring

Consistency compounds. Small steps repeated over time lead to big gains. Don't aim to be consistently great. Aim to be great at being consistent.

Most general fitness exercisers go too hard on their easy days.

Every day becomes moderately hard.

They then don't accumulate the consistency and volume of work that is required to actually increase aerobic fitness significantly.

"My son needs help. He is falling behind."

I get emails all the time. Parents are willing to move towns & spend thousands because their kid is running a 4:20 mile instead of 4:10

But the solution isn't what they think.

A story about the success delusion: stevemagness.substack.com/p/the-succes...
The Success Delusion
Why our relentless chase for achievement is the very thing holding us back.

Hard work absolutely matters.

But it isn't the only thing. Hard work doesn't separate the best in the world from the 50th. Luck, timing, talent, support, etc. all matter too.

Be humble in your success.

Balance in life is BS.

To achieve almost anything, there are periods where you have to go all-in and singularly focus on one thing. That's fine.

The key is being able to step back when YOU choose to.

Good things take time.

When we focus on outcomes instead of process it results in a few things:
1. Puts time pressure on us shifting us to quick fixes and shortcuts

2. Pushes us towards a focus on the external. Extrinsic rewards/motivation and comparison to others

A vital ingredient in life: Have some clear your mind time.

Mine is running. No phone, music, devices. Just me, alone with my thoughts, in nature.

Clear your mind time = Space where your mind can drift and wander freely. It's not drawn to or distracted by technology.

Do Meaningful work

When we feel our work has a purpose, when we can derive meaning from the mundane, we're not only able to persist longer, but also experience greater levels of satisfaction and enjoyment.

t's not about being permissive, or soft...

It's about players or kids knowing that you care about them as a human beings, that you support them, that you fulfill their basic psychological needs.

That creates the security to free us up to take risks, to be tough.

Show up
Work hard
Strive for consistency over perfection
Find joy in the activity itself
Go on the journey with friends
Play the long game, instead of chasing short term results

Do that and you'll end up pretty dang good at whatever it is you are doing.

When Joseph Campbell was asked what it was like to have a peak experience, to feel alive, he said:

"My peak experiences all came in athletics"

Hard things make us feel alive. They force us to be fully engaged, to experience emotions, to navigate discomfort

Motivation should wane.

If you expect to be motivated all the time, you are setting yourself up for disappointment.

Ride the wave of motivation. Don't fret if it's not there. It'll come back.
