The resulting floods across Mozambique, South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Eswatini have been catastrophic. 🧵 (1/4)

Russia is using the cold of winter as a weapon against Ukrainian civilians by continuously attacking the country’s energy infrastructure.
It’s cruel and a war crime.

This isn’t a real photo of Minneapolis nurse Alex Pretti pinned down by federal immigration agents. The image has a digital watermark that shows it was generated using Google’s artificial intelligence tool, Gemini.

It’s crazy and bad but I’m putting my hopes on the American people.
Autocracy can only exist with many people supporting it, silently or actively.

Speak up. Everyone, everywhere. Protest. Strike. Stay peaceful.
This is a really incredible piece. Share it widely 🎁https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/2026/01/minneapolis-uprising/685755/?gift=C-rzmQ8PsUHt15odxTKJDn7xrpPNxSpotkNz_P27oI0

There were at least 200 people lining the intersection of 5th and B tonight in Davis, CA, in honor of Alex Pretti. It was moving to see so many people come out on short notice with our mismatched candles, bike lights, flashlights, and string lights.

Sample data from the NASA-ISRO SAR (NISAR) L-band imaging radar is now available from the NASA EarthData system. These are preliminary products with some caveats but include an interferogram for the November 2025 volcanic eruption in Ethiopia. www.earthdata.nasa.gov/news/nisar-s...

Again those who contributed the least to atmospheric pollution bearing the brunt of climate chaos.

Mozambique's disaster agency has shared footage of a rescue of stranded residents in flood-stricken Gaza province. Weeks of heavy rain and storms in Mozambique and neighboring South Africa have killed at least 150 people.

“It may take a while before we know the true scale of the bloodshed that’s taken place amid the internet blackout - but Iranians able to call out of the country for the first time in several days are telling their relatives abroad of terrible levels of death and destruction.”

So cool, can we do the same?

“The world overlooks Uruguay’s example at its own risk. In fact, renewables are ready, the playbook is in place, and the advantages are tangible. The only missing ingredient is the political will, which is often clouded by self-interest and money.”
“Uruguay did what most nations still call impossible: it built a power grid that runs almost entirely on renewables—at half the cost of fossil fuels. The physicist who led that transformation says the same playbook could work anywhere—if governments have the courage to change the rules.”

This is really interesting. The country comparison table, and the corresponding extensive article on childhood vaccine schedules (linked in the post).
On Jan. 5, Acting Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Jim O’Neill signed a memorandum that reduced the number of diseases targeted in the childhood vaccine schedule for all children to 11, just one more than Denmark's schedule.
