When I went through military broadcast journalism school, they taught an ultra-naive version of "be factual in your articles." It always deeply bothered me, because it encouraged an uncomplicated absence of self-reflection about how the writer's biases affect framing & word choice. 1/2

"Global Elite" is a really unhelpful descriptor when it should be more like: "Narcissistic, god-Complex Wealth Hoarders with a Demonstrably Decreased Level of Empathy for Their Fellow Humans."

On the one hand, it makes me sad that Pat Metheny Group's "The Way Up" was their last album. On the other, every time I hear it I'm reminded that it was, hands down, their magnum opus, and I was incredibly lucky to be in the live audience when they recorded the DVD in South Korea.

Digital infrastructure is a lot like physical infrastructure in that most people don't even think about it until something actually goes wrong. And then, when it *does* go wrong, the public suddenly discovers how large, complex, and political the problems are, with no quick, armchair solutions.

I would argue this is because we are told to be proud of the bullshit, and that other countries are “jealous” of our bullshit, rather than being taught that we have a responsibility to our neighbors our, and our communities, to live and act as if that bullshit could become actual reality.
