Unfortunately I think people are slightly more comfortable with their comforts coming at non-Americans' expense, since they don't have to look at those people every day.

But also they may be less comfortable with it if we all collectively felt more in control of that.

Most people want to be good, even though they less often want to DO good.

I can certainly understand loving what you do and not wanting to stop.

But I would also not jeopardize it by locking a co-worker in a room and masturbating in front of them without permission, so...

The ONLY reason Dan Harmon isn't on my shit list is that Megan Ganz publicly forgave him and has a thriving career, and he seems to have demonstrated actual change and growth.

The women Louis abused have not all been so fortunate. Meanwhile he's selling out shows.

Agreed. I want to believe in positive change, I certainly believe in restorative justice over punitive.

But at the same time, we can't trust men who abused their power this substantially to just say "sorry" and not do it again. True penitence would involve stepping away from that role.

Part of the reason I'm personally hyped for the new Buffy series is that I'm excited for Sarah Michelle Gellar to reclaim the character completely separately from Whedon's influence and create a set that feels safe and welcoming to women.

Something that actually lives up to the message of the show.
November 29, 2025 at 10:38 PM
Yeah, exactly. If you accept that people are complicated, it's easier to accept that people who make good, impactful work can still make decisions that make them not worth supporting.

Buffy is one of my favorite stories, and also Whedon is a bad guy who betrayed the beliefs expressed in it.

That's interesting! Feels like you could absolutely build a whole movie, maybe even multiple movies, around the idea though
November 29, 2025 at 10:31 PM
This idea has been floating around for at least a decade, but the studio system probably isn't willing to take on the risk of telling that story.
November 29, 2025 at 10:28 PM
Yeah, it's always frustrating when people act like bad people were never good at something.

All that lie does is keep us from accepting when people who make things we like do bad shit.

And yeah when he decided empathy didn't serve him he set it aside in his comedy, and lost what it had.

It's the same with Indiana Jones. He's a dorky nerd who happens to be handsome and do cool things, but he also fails more often than he succeeds.

Good heroes aren't just cool, they're endearing. And only people who can fail are endearing.

And if you feel you need to be abusive towards OTHERS to act well? You're a shit actor AND a shit person.
November 29, 2025 at 3:41 AM
Genuinely: if you think you NEED to harm yourself in order to act you're kind of a shit actor.

Absolutely embarrassing thing to admit.
November 29, 2025 at 3:32 AM
But I'm honestly glad, it's helped me become a very capable person in the realm of entertainment. You gotta be able to solve your own problems with that little money.
November 29, 2025 at 12:03 AM
I am nothing resembling an expert on even a "low-budget" production.

According to SAG documents, every single thing I've ever made has been WELL below an "ultra low-budget" production, which is their lowest tier lol
November 28, 2025 at 11:58 PM
I include myself in that number, if you don't think the director should count then reduce that number to 2 lol
November 28, 2025 at 11:53 PM
Not only does it encourage stuff like this, and affect actors' work in general. But it also leads to casting becoming a game of "who can I hire that I know will just get the job done?"

Which leads to a more impenetrable industry as well. Just good for no one except the people siphoning up the money
November 28, 2025 at 11:46 PM
This may be cynical, but: this feels like the worst result of how the dubbing industry has been running itself for the past 10-ish years.

Modern dubs are more polished and consistent, and many talented people are working on them always, but they're also being treated like an assembly line.
