Between getting my cuirass last Friday and finally hitting a full 100lbs set on the chest press machine, I think there’s definitely been a shift in the wind recently.

We’re making the arm/leg harnesses in a fashion that’s going to be based around English style plate, so a lot of barley twist fluting on the rerebraces, cuisses etc., he’s already made a couple of pieces with that type of fluting so should turn out great ^^

We mostly did our own thing with this (the front strap is more common on German armour), but the biggest reference we used was of Robert Hungerford’s effigy, which is one of the few pictorial examples of 15th c. English plate. No real, physical English plate of this period is known to have survived.

Was helping a friend find historical ref images for a design for an archer. I only just found this out:

When the team that lifted the Mary Rose raised the hull, they found like three or four iron chests that were full of longbows.

Of the 250 longbows consigned to the ship, 172 have been recovered.

Big news you lot. Was fighting back tears this morning.

I was gonna wait until this weekend’s Rite to announce it publicly. BUT.

After all the trouble with the fauld was sorted. The cuirass is finished ^^.
I’m going to pick it up from the workshop next week.
Steve has done a wonderful job on it.

Hey you lot! I managed to get my hands on Guy Windsor’s Vadi translation, and I’ve been reading through it! There’s enough here for me to learn it myself ^^.

We will probably be streaming next over the weekend, but I might put Shangri-La Frontier on in the Discord server tomorrow night!
Page from Guy Windsor’s translation of late 15th century Italian fencing master Filippo Vadi’s treatise, ‘De Arte Gladiatoria Dimicandi’, or ‘The Art of Fencing with Swords’. It outlines the Posta, Posta Frontale. It includes an image of the Posta from the treatise, where the model’s back is turned to lead with the right foot, and his sword (a two-handed sword) is held in a hanging position, with the blade pointed slightly upwards. ‘I am the frontal guard, so secure Of cuts and thrusts I have the solution.’ There is an additional paragraph of commentary that relates and contrasts Vadi’s Frontale with Fiore’s (a prior fencing master) own Frontale, mentioning that it is closer to Fiore’s Fenestra than it is Fiore’s Frontale. There is also a compared example from Fiore’s own treatise below the paragraph (Il Fior Di Battaglia), but this is just out of camera shot.

It showed a black and white photograph of two hands resting in prayer. Their arms, bearing vambraces and couters, laid upon a cuirass below. Dawn entered from the arched window abreast, where the camera had been pointed. Varying shades that scattered across the body suggested a radiant enamel tapestry in the glass, and it embraced the lifeless torso with the judgment of an angel’s wing. But its bloom was so strong that it outshone whatever tale could be told on the window, as if the meridian’s sheer weight had crushed through it. Some fluid shape, like a veil or hood, was attached to the cuirass shoulders, pulled over where the head would be. Though the face was open, light couldn’t find it from the sides, leaving the shape nothing more than a hollow pit that silently pled, and - not yet divorced from its body - still dwelled on the life it once had. A pattern of letters traced the border; some sort of abbreviated credo. The palm and backhand were rendered lifelike, right down to soft veins and metacarpals. But there was a gloss of alabaster. This slick patina covered the hood where the dawn touched it, and it was only clear, now, that this was an effigy. The curator looked on it, brows knitted, ‘...It’s as if he would waste his breath ascending.’

Crying is something you might do often, and if not that, numbness. You don’t feel like things will get better. You make it through the day because you know that there are people who care about you. Because of that, you have a little hope somewhere that this may turn around.
