I also tend to excel when handwriting timed essays—a skill that seemingly runs counter to every aspect of my neurodivergence. I suspect the charge of anxiety combined with the problem-based parameters of timed writing unlocks a hyperfocus super power. 🤙🏻

This is not to say Word colonized my brain. Maybe it did, partially. But I knew that there were KINDS of writing I COULDN’T do using Word. Even now, I can’t draft POETRY using a computer. I have to handwrite it, then move it to the computer to shape its raw energy into legible form.

My master’s thesis cycled out to 150+ pages before being revised down to 72. My hands simply couldn’t have kept up.

The affordances of cut/copy/paste made MY process possible. My SCHOLARSHIP exists (even excels) because of the architectural possibilities Word provides my divergent cognition.

I was surprised—not because it was an unheard of practice (in the early 1980s), but because it made me think about his writing PROCESS. I’d only finished my master’s thesis a year earlier (2001)—and the thought of handwriting and typing via electric typewriter was… unfathomable.

…The fact that, as we tracked last season, AI EdTech is being rolled out most aggressively at HBCUs & other PoC-serving institutions just makes its intent, as a new iteration of Jim Crow, more bald-faced.

Gonna go download Tanksley whole research archive now.

Surely there’s an appropriate Twain quote here?

Hollywood has been running a version of this for decades: Chase ROI via known quantities (sequels, reboots) EVEN THOUGH the ROI might be negligible. General market stability and nominal profit > probability, faith in human artistry, faith in audience receptivity.

AI Avengers 56, in theaters now!

Function and form. Lensed (only/primarily) through market value, art is only a commodity, and the means of production inhibits ROI. Eliminate and/or automate the means of production and access greater control of art-as-commodity.

Fuck the artist, living wages, cultural value—the HUMAN in the art.

to be clear, i think it's great. if you avoid using AI-generated content in your videos (about prehistoric animals, etc), you should get to benefit from pointing that out. if every restaurant is serving food mixed with sawdust, but you're not, you're entitled to put up a sign that says "NO SAWDUST".
