Social media isn’t safe so this is mostly science, gardening and social commentary.

I garden for food and pleasure.

Pretty sure ALT text is to feed machine learning. Training databases is valuable.

A Tree Grows (came from) Brooklyn. 🌱📖🌳

I harvested seed pods from London Plane trees in the fall. They are a Middle East (ish) plane and American sycamore hybrid and have beautiful bark and shape.

Internet experts said they’re difficult to germinate.

They were wrong! 😑

Just soak and plant!

Just saw a news article about another measles outbreak. I had what I think might be my 3rd MMR in November. (GenX here)

Injured my leg outside. Not trivially. Ultimately developed what I suspected was cellulitis.

Until I just saw an image of measles rash.

I had a rash from hairline to toes. 🤔

Per Craig Ferguson: When you're about to say something, ask yourself

1. Does this need to be said

2. Does this need to be said by me

3. Does this need to be said by me right now

It's amazing how asking these will get keep you out of trouble (that is, if you actually have sense to begin with)
I’ve been trying very hard to not be an asshole as I get older. Often, that just means keeping my mouth shut and nodding along.

I had a wonderful holiday.

Adults do a secret Santa only. Gifts for the kids.

Breakfast of beautiful duck egg GF popovers.

The late meat was just well prepared ham, mashed potatoes and green beans.

Beautiful handmade desserts all over.

Surprisingly, a great game of Cards Against Humanity!🍽️

Merry Festivus! Please enjoy my holiday shrub.

No double entendres intended.

(But if you come up with a good one, I will take credit)

In 2023 I became obsessed with videos of dads in cargo shortswaiting in parking lots during Taylor Swift's Eras Tour. So when she came to town, I grabbed a camera and headed down to talk to them. I thought it'd be funny. It turned out to be something else entirely.

You are painting a vision of a future in which teachers create lessons with "A.i.," students complete them with "A.i.," and teachers grade them with "A.i."

No learning takes place under this system.

The only benefactors of this system are the corporations being paid for the "A.i." products.

If you are a teacher, I beg you with everything I have:

Do not inflict "A.i." on your students. Do not make them use this evil tech that could end up telling them to kill themselves. Do not make them use image generators that destroy their innate, human ability to create on their own.

No ballistics, no motive. Questions remain.

But the FBI is 100% sure that a Portuguese national is the shooter, huh?

Convenient.

Fun fact: copper is so easily reworked and recycled that there is a tiny tiny chance that some of Ea-Nasir's inferior ingots are in the device you used to write this skeet.

🍽️🍝

As someone who worked in a Bourdain era restaurant, I found “The Bear” unwatchable. There’s all sorts of abuse and illegal behavior and psychological torture in that environment. But not like that.

Increase in productivity since 1979: 87%

Increase in hourly pay since 1979: 32%

Just so happens that ~25% of workers were unionized in 1979. Today? 10%.

As unions declined, the super-rich have taken a larger share of wealth generated by labor. We must build back union power.

As Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis stated in 1933; “We can have democracy in this country or we can have great wealth concentrated in the hands of the few, but we cannot have both.”

Today, at a time of unprecedented income & wealth inequality, his words ring truer than ever.
