“It might have been a migraine? Can Eideons get migraines?” Dien rubbed the back of his neck. “Sure, I don’t see why not, you’ve got a brain. That’s the prerequisite right?” The doorframe squeaked as Jas leaned her weight against it. “I don’t know if that’s how it works.” Dien said with a crooked smile. “No one knows how migraines work. I’d ask Araiya about whatever went on in there before you leave tomorrow.” Jas scribbled tiny circles above his head with her index finger.

I can't sing enough praises about Oh No! Here Comes Trouble. Hands down one of the best dramas I've watched in recent memory; writing is water tight with great characters and moments. I think about that ending sequence all the time. If I can write something like this I've peaked.

“I was remembering, you cried that time. You never cry.” Dien answered, suddenly mindful of the cable coupled to the first three vertebrae of his spine. The magnetic nodes separated synthetic skin and slipped into notches on the black alloyed column. A heatless current drafted through the middle, where the bed slit to accommodate the wirework. Shivers skimmed up his shoulder blades covered by a thin mesh; He had to alter all his tops this way, unwilling to sacrifice another of his favorite shirts to his wings.

Nearly all of the morning commuters had snaked into the tin-silver bus and stuffed it like a generous can of beans. Dien crossed the threshold of the folding door and was immediately prompted to buy tickets at one solcrit per rider by a purchase interface floating yellow in the center of his vision. He confirmed two people with the flick of a thought and stepped aboard with Hux, fitting into a crack in the crowd. He dropped the tightly drawn bag between his legs to save precious space, people around him squirmed to carve out more room for themselves. In that rearrangement, Dien became conscious of the metered push of Hux’s chest on his back, Hux had planked against him, compressing them into one. His partner gripped the bar that strung up the leather loops, the top of his head inches away from the ceiling.

They coasted past a stretch of storefronts, many still had their painted shutters drawn; the pawn shop, the moms and pops general store, a hole-in-the-wall that sold savory egg wraps. Even the incandescent statue of the Luminary Miliang, who swallowed their aureole light to remind us of humility, stood unilluminated outside the mosaic clad church, probably worrying about electric bills now in their terrestrial incarnation. The butcher’s was an exception. He watched as the gaunt woman floated in her white smock and apron, bearing an amber glow cast by the light in her shop. She was hooking up slumped, naked chickens and ducks with solemn grace—a holy scientist of desecration.

Araiya had installed a flight module. The morphing metal responded to his will and would burgeon into wings from his back. The coppery mercury collected in chambers that flanked his spine. She also informed him, reluctantly, that the malleable material could double as his weapons system should he require it. Araiya blamed herself; she had decided to remove the smart metal from his original schematics, believing it to be too grandiose for an ordinary existence. But it did not dawn on her, that recklessness had always been a part of his design.

Ivo lets out a long held breath, and allows in tepid air to sooth his inner workings. He watches the fallen flares dot the sky before him and wonders if the metal warship and everything it carried will burn away in the long fiery descent. He leans back and is just about to let his tense shoulders slack, when a shadow glides soundlessly across the thatched roof of the cottage, like a fast moving cloud. The creature, whose frame shielded the light of the moons for but an instant, arcs their body in a tilt and slices through the long grass in a semicircle, touching the tall blades with the tip of its leather-ridged wings.

The slab brushing against Laurel’s palm began to glow. It was a shoulder blade, pearly letters writhing on bone. The last Plea of a dying sorcerer, power crystallized inwards, branded into their skeleton then carved out after death—Relics. The light leaped from the first bone to another, a pebble cast into a pond, it rippled outwards. Ribs, pelvises, femurs, knobs of spines, the organic wall brightened until it lit the room in a pallid tint.

If the fade was their inescapable end. If they couldn’t choose how they died, maybe they could choose how they would live. Certainly not in shame, self-loathing, or pity, pregnant with a blistering hope so tremendous that it would drown them when it burst. They wanted to spend their days under the large beech tree, dreaming. Ignorant of how foul they truly were. “Laurel?” Hethe’s voice stopped the spiral.

“You would do well to watch your feet, lest the ground turn into a deep marsh beneath them.” Laurel retorted, icing their tone into a frozen lake. “I’ve got very little to lose and you, everything. It would not be prudence that holds me back, but mercy.” Sevryn’s mouth thinned, likely perceiving the truth in Laurel’s words. “Your sharp tongue won’t better your prospects” He bit back. “Yet, it made you consider yours. Run along before I commit myself to ruining you.” Laurel said. “If you don’t fade first.” Sevryn disentangled from Laurel like a knife from a wound and slid through the ornate doorway. Laurel took a deep breath to cool the fire rising in their cheeks. Sevryn loathed them, ever since the day they met in the lecture hall at fifteen. Laurel had seen it in his eyes, his pupil pinholed with contempt so cutting, it ripped straight through Laurel’s chest. He had bit on his lips until it drained of blood, his whole face whitened as he constricted something violent inside. The worst part was, Laurel didn’t know why this stranger wanted to gut them alive.

I don't know if this counts~ but an injury is pretty bad if it kills (´∀｀)? (I don't write far enough in my stories to really fuck someone up ahaha...)
Ivo locks his calloused palms around the spear pole and twists, mechanism spins and clicks into place. The leaf-formed blade sears with luster, rapping star fuel until pale. He plunges the silver streak into cortisol flooded flesh and rends nerves with ease. The buck rears, upending Ivo’s senses violently, its breath thrashing with bleats. The quills on the deer’s back retracts, rippling into the polished surface of its plates. The dark haired teen tethers onto the animal with a fierce grip. “Now! Cyan! Now!” Ivo shouts, swallowing air, not sure if his dragon can even hear him. They did. An afterimage of a dark blue dappled in green sheen rips past Ivo in a squall of pounding wings. Cyan splits his jaws wide and saws into the unprotected neck of their prey, two colossal bodies yield to the forest floor with a tremendous quake.

In the days that followed, Hethe had wanted to make himself useful to Laurel like a page would. Laurel didn’t need Hethe to wait on them but was keen to forge a tie. Back at the mansion, Laurel adapted to front lacing their own stays — trousers and shirts were simpler —and tidied their own bed. They knew how to braid the long tassels of their hair back from their eyes in a crude plait and learned how to brush away the knots. They hid leftover tarts in a lidded jar for when hunger struck before sleep, and played chase with their own shadow. When solitude swelled too vast on quiet nights, they pattered with a voice in their chest, the decisive voice of a made-up god telling them that they won’t always have to feel this way. Hethe was that prophecy fulfilled.

Laurel stole a moment for themself, folding their arms tight, feeling singular, a barren branch in a garden. Choosing Day, Laurel had pictured it from the yearnings of others. In the classroom, while napping on the long lecture tables lined against the windows, their head propped against a loose fist. A boy in the middle of the room, the one who always stayed behind with all the questions, spoke of Choosing Day like he had lived it. His peers encircled him as he gestured vividly, embellishing every sight, every sound, all five senses. He boasted about what he was going to wear, what Pleas he’d practice more; a high collared robe of gold and teal, cinched with a gemmed belt, rain-calling spells. And Laurel saw, behind sleeping eyes, vision rouged by the sun, the flame haired boy with ebony skin, decorated in droplets of ray. He crossed his arm with his Ikon, a woman haloed. He drank from her cup, sharing her divinity. Laurel dreamed, perhaps they’d look handsome in gold too. They woke, seeing the boy in the center of the classroom. He laughed, gleaming too bright for Laurel to dream.

All Dien wanted to think about was the bouncing weight of Callisto the calico on his shoulders. Being tethered to something alive was sensory fireworks and more overwhelming than what his synthetic brain expected. He felt each bob of her paws as she tried to anchor herself against the sway. When she eventually balled in the back corner of her carrier, he felt her warmth pressed to the thin of his shirt as he shielded her with his coat from the cold. Dien had an obsessive urge to preserve everything about her and to make good on the pleasures life had promised her.

He stretched his voice for help until it went hoarse. He was alone. Tears threatened him. But he held it back. His chest ballooned and singed as he fought it. Then his breath hitched and a scent swirled in the back of his tongue, not earthy and mineral tinged like the cave. Ivo drew another heated breath. He swore he tasted flowers. He prodded the void again, this time a pungent bouquet fumed up the back of his skull and pooled around his temple. It reminded him of clusters of white blooms that sprung from oil-leafed hedges, that smelled so sweetly they stopped him in his tracks as he played chase with his cousins in the garden. When the florets gave too much, their perfume distilled to a savory musk that clung to the roof of his mouth, like it did now. Ivo latched on to the unseen trail and moved towards where the scent lingered strongest. The familiar floral musk eased his nerves and made him vulnerable. He gently slacked his eyelids shut to dampen the dry pinch.

“Sevryn! You are a disgrace!” Hethe seethed and gripped the hilt of the sword latched to his belt until his knuckles paled. Something changed in Hethe that made the hairs on Laurel’s neck swarm. The way he coiled his knees and curled his back, he was ready to lunge. Laurel threw a hand in front of Hethe before he could spring. Rage twisted Hethe’s features, wringing lines around his eyes and mouth. He pulled on his sword until steel peeked from its sheath. A flash of cold ran up Laurel’s back and they pushed their palms back until the pads of their fingers kissed metal.

Soon, I’m sure.” Hethe nodded. Laurel could tell he was combating a frown by the way his brow squirmed. “I’m getting closer, in the next few days, even!” Laurel forced a laugh, “Then I’ll miss eating lunch like this.” “I’ll bring something hot tomorrow.” Hethe softened his tone.
