Honestly the meaning of good graphics is not if it is hyperrealistic but more like if you were able to do the vision of the game with what you have
Like, a nice game is a game that can show well what it is supposed to show with it's art direction, and a ugly game fails to do that

One thing I really like about Gen 1 Pokemon is that a good bunch of them were treated more as their own individual rather than species with that many members
Stuff like Dugtrio being Diglett triplets, Cubone and it's relationship with it's dead mother, and Kangaskhan fighting alongside it's baby...
