One of my favorite chapters in Pamuk's My Name Is Red has been from the viewpoint of a forged coin. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I'd ever say such a thing (and this is why we read).

We're lucky to have in this issue two miniatures from @addisonzeller.bsky.social, although as often is the case with Zeller, "miniature" is a deceptive descriptor. These efficent stories, like Borges', are denser and more multitudinous than the longest novels.

And now to read as much as I can this evening so I can talk civilly to others tomorrow. That's the rule: hours of book reading=moments of civility

You better believe I'm making this right now for tomorrow.
This is the cornbread I made for my bookclub. The group likes making food that ties into the book's region and this time it was Love in the Time of Cholera. Everyone loved it and it made so much, I was able to eat through it for days. It's an elaborate recipe for cornbread but so very good.
Live on Island Time with this Caribbean Cornbread
If you aren't a fan of cornbread, this recipe will change your mind! Straight from the Caribbean, it contains crushed pineapple and creamed corn which make this cornbread moist and rich.

Happy St Catherine’s Day! She’s the patron of women students, anyone who works with wheels (e.g., potters), tanners, philosophers, and librarians. She’s also my confirmation saint. I love this painting of her by Caravaggio.

Discovering that Muriel Spark adopted Patricia Highsmith's cat, Spider, is all I needed to make a dull day better.
Some trivia: The cat Spark’s holding on the cover was named Spider; she’d adopted him from Patricia Highsmith. Spider was a fan of fireworks - he found that their booms tended to stun the nearby lizards, making them easy for him to hunt down and kill. I imagine Spark admired this display of cunning…

Even from the simplest, most realistic point of view, the places we long for occupy a far larger place in our life, at any given moment, than the place in which we happen to be.

My city is redoing the main street that runs near my house. It's a huge project that's much needed and will take a few years to complete. Today they cut down all the trees lining the road. This included the gingkos, one of more charming parts of living here. Modernity is ruthless.
