More lately, the constant pressure to enrol more students, and the constant demands from marketing to have new 'products' on offer leads to courses that make little sense financially, let alone educationally, and that are fragile and likely to fall over at short notice.

Deakin canned its first school of engineering when I was in year 12, leaving enrolled students in a mess. In that case the blame really lays with the Fraser Liberal government who cut funding specifically to engineering at Deakin. I was intending to study at Deakin, so dodged a bullet.
