that kangaroo what makes the game rec threads and such
also a lil thing of 2017 rocket: makes it canon that he likes 'em big

got hired to do a heist of a vault for land deeds, ran into 'Technet' (an old marvel, specifically chris claremont, thing) doing security, left to take the fall and stand trial. this was in 2017 so nah, he definitely ain't still in jail lmao. the 2017 Rocket run is 6 issues, very breezy read.

none of this 'we're working on things behind closed doors' shit, just 'this is exactly how and why they fucked me over, and how racist it was'

probably the biggest influence on why i am the way i am about comics as an industry because going to email him meant going to his website and he was INCREDIBLY blunt, upfront, and honest about how the comics industry treated him and treated black and other minority creators in general

only comic creator i ever emailed, to tell him how i picked damage control at random out of a longbox at a comics store and how much i loved it. got a personal email back about how glad he was people are still going back and reading that stuff, appreciating it, great guy.

remembering when bendis named a new character of his at DC naomi mcduffie, after the late great dwayne mcduffie, which when i found about it i was like. man you didn't know what mcduffie thought about you, huh

(from issue 26 of mcduffie's run on JLA)

i'm saying rocket needs to have opinions on space github

it really revealed to me that far more than any characterization issues, his pacing and story structure are the worst parts of his writing. like i joked about bendis pacing BEFORE that run, but with a new character he as to try to not write just Peter Parker stories, he wastes SO much time.
December 5, 2025 at 3:06 PM
if you ever go back and actually read all of ultimate spider-man and the transition from peter to miles it really becomes obvious how much bendis' success with that book is pure 'remixing' and when he has to make his own stuff he panics, freezes up, and then stalls for time even more than usual
December 5, 2025 at 2:58 PM
sometimes even the characters he did create. sometimes i think about how much of his time with miles he kept struggling to think of ways to make his own cast and world and kept just dragging in peter parker stuff. man is lost without structure from somebody else's work.

also when it does get goofy it's real fun
December 5, 2025 at 2:50 PM
that said, i did think al ewing's take on him in his short Rocket solo putting him into a kind of Ocean's 11 role was very fun. real good time for anybody who wants to check that out, and as is al ewing's standard, works in a ton of old marvel shit in a way that's great for new readers too

rocket raccoon should be a kind of inversion of the action hero/hacker nerd "in english, foureyes" dynamic; less technobabble and more "HOW ABOUT YOU PAY THE FUCK ATTENTION WHEN I EXPLAIN HOW TO OPEN A PDF THIS TIME, HOLY SHIT". an IT guy who is constantly at the gun range (but is not a libertarian)
December 5, 2025 at 2:35 PM
the bendis GOTG run legitimately trying to make "blam! murdered ya!" his catchphrase kinda the epitome of/trickle down effects source of him just being 'badass and snarky' type with not much else. the man should be having a constant headache that nobody else on the team knows Space Linux operations

that's the one that's only memorable for 'that one had brockhampton in it, right'

this is it. the only recorded time a sub underwater destroyed another sub underwater. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sinking...

did you know also that, in real life, in the history of submarine combat, there is basically actually only a single recorded encounter of 'submarine destroying another submarine'. there's submarines destroying boats, and boats destroying submarines, but subs on subs? happens almost never.

Mech Ace, callsign “LONE STAR”.
Air Ace, callsign “HUMMINGBIRD”. Submarine Ace, callsign “ANGELSHARK”.

We brought together the three top pilots from each branch of our glorious military, and the conversation which followed was extremely disappointing.

granted, i haven't watched the whole game, so maybe it gets fumbled, but the core, basic structure is one i really like and i think more games could study from. sometimes it's actually better to sacrifice the side stuff that makes for good ad copy of 'there's so much you can do!'

shadowrun: the vibes are unparalleled. the topics the storytelling lends itself to are so rarely fond anywhere else. how long it'll take you to handle a combat encounter that gives everybody something to do: jesus fucking christ
December 4, 2025 at 2:48 PM
and just like actual shadowrun tabletop, the combat can be kind of a tedious hassle, especially anything involving hacking!

the persona 2 duology are my favorite persona games by a country mile and it's not just because "the story and characters are better"

(the story and characters ARE better, but man, the pacing is a fucking sonic rocket compared to P3-5, and in fact, to most RPGs in general)
