For me it’s been post TROS and the hyper levels of nitpicking subsequent material has gotten. I didn’t like TROS, but I don’t think a lot of the material after deserves most of the online vitriol it gets.

I find it harder to get excited, not because any piece of material looks bad. But because the online environment for it is such a massive downer it sucks the joy out of the before and after.

I hadn’t considered that at all, I just chalked it up to be a Mcguffin to move the plot along lol. While I didn’t expect this to be the answer I also wasn’t expecting the answer to be something as dramatically cool as what you described.

Yeah I was pretty stunned she just tossed it away, but also makes sense that creating a giant rift to Another world would require such energy. I was kinda hoping it would be used down the line though. Maybe they just wanted to be done with it as a plot device

I wonder if there’s a correlation between how profound a story is and how rabid its fanbase is. Or if it’s purely tied to popularity

They seem to abide by a list of conventions and tired talking points and can’t think outside of that box.

I wonder if production timelines prevent this, but seems to me that there should be a more compendium internally for every major character lol that can be referenced and sourced before quests are written.

Kinda wild to me people get paid to write stuff like that. Film punditry is just wrought with the least intellectually curious people on the planet. Imagine getting paid to write about art, and having nothing interesting to say at all.

Funnily enough I think it’s these same people who pretend like there’s no difference between the two. “Anakin was already an evil murderer!” same energy as Tyrion lecturing the other characters and the audience that Danerys having a heel turn makes perfect sense cuz she killed slavers.

Definitely am! It’s funny that people got together to test this hypothesis on the sequels. I think grumpy Luke could have worked but they needed to do so much more if they were gonna do that and it needed to be on screen.

I think we would need more data, but I think Luke’s behavior is so incongruous with the last time we saw the character I really don’t know how anyone thought this was a good idea.

Not saying that Lucas didn’t have a good reason to sell at the time. He probably did. But “Lucasfilms best idea they had going for them at the time were that I’m Han Solo Kinect and Star Wars Detours” is a weird dig that is tangential at best to the creative impulse at the time.
