This sounds very interesting - do you know if Newcastle Council have / are considering this re the local road lighting policy? @junasathian.bsky.social @mikecookson.bsky.social

3/That said it would be welcome investment & it’s great parks have been discussed in Parliament (if shocking they were ignored for 8 years). They are so important in a city like our where many live in flats or only have small backyards.

2/It’s a problem that Council Officers can just ignore these very real issues as they really affect what children can do & there are genuine public health reasons to consider this given the well-documented issues with childhood obesity & mental health issues.

1/The assessment for SGosGreen was interesting re kids travel, as it specifically said the mitigation for losing the green space was that PaddyFreemansPark was close. No consideration of whether a kid would be allowed to walk that far (& cross the notorious HaddricksMill roundabouts) unaccompanied.
South Gosforth Green - comments by 25 September - SPACE for Gosforth
Newcastle City Council has published a planning application to build on South Gosforth Green. We thought we better have a look.

We recently wrote to Newcastle City Council about the impending resurfacing of the busy Fenham Hall Drive/Wingrove Road junction, asking if there will be any improvements for walking and cycling as part of the resurfacing works. It's important to keep making these points!

Well done! Looking forward to hearing more details!

That pic shows how unattractive the streets look - despite being the approach to Grey’s Monument and having some very fine buildings. And how little space pedestrians have.

It’s a shame - linking the Laing to the Monument would be a natural extension to the Grainger Town project pedestrianisation.

According to the South East Northumberland Rail User Group, that money would buy 2 Northumberland Lines. SENRUG also have plans to improve Cramlington rail services so there are alternatives to the roundabout.

We’re also wondering how the roundabout will affect Newcastle’s air pollution problem.

Both are much needed - but the slow progress is such a shame.

Improving Manors is actually really exciting for the city - it would be great if the Council could understand this & tell us more about their plans.

SENRUG want the capacity at Manors increased to 4 tracks and this to eventually extend to Benton junction.

No need to wonder - just need to look at the campaigns of the South-East Northumberland Rail User Group. We really hope Newcastle’s politicians will start to champion the one for Manors Railway Station.

We agree but your blogger has missed out the new @my-metro.bsky.social trains as one designed for kids. They have lots of pushchair space (separate to wheelchair space) and when the doors open, a step pushes out to bridge the gap to the platform.

2/ Cramlington also isn’t far from Newcastle by rail (approx 10 mins) but the service is poor. The local rail campaign have a plan & know their stuff (previous success being the Northumberland Line). Rail would be a much better solution.

The local MP ( @emmafoodymp.bsky.social ) is running a very energetic campaign re this . It’s near Gosforth - an Air Quality Management Area (although nitrogen dioxide levels have now dropped due to the CAZ). Neither the MP nor our mayor are addressing how inducing more traffic will affect this.
October 18, 2025 at 1:20 PM
The roundabout is already enormous - making it even bigger will only induce more traffic & potentially increase Newcastle’s air pollution problem. What solutions are you & @emmafoodymp.bsky.social suggesting for that?

The SENRUG Rail plan would be a much better solution for Cramlington.
