Nerd. Neurotic. Retired public defender. I'm sure these three things have nary a thing to do with one another.
And if you stay together, for that matter. Lizza continues to display a staggering lack of self-awareness of his own complicity.

I spent the era convinced we were all going to kill ourselves in a nuclear war. Might've actually made more plans for the future back then if I'd believed we'd have one.

I don't know what — or really, if anything — in Lizza's account is true, because I don't trust him as far as I can throw him. If *any* of it is true, the fact that we are only hearing about it now, after the fact, to drive subscriptions to his paywalled private newsletter, is frankly vile!

I was struggling to be witty and megapascals sounded funnier to me than kilonewtons or meganewtons but I don't think it worked. Huh. I guess you might say I folded... under pressure.

Megapascals. The gusts will feel like being crushed under 4x the air pressure on Venus, but less than half the oceanic pressure at the bottom of the Mariana Trench. Nevertheless, prepare to be a bit smooshed.

I was inches from making this joke, to the point I'd grabbed a screenshot of Bond and Kerim Bey in the underground cistern beneath the Soviet Embassy.

And while we shouldn't anthropomorphize, it also shouldn't surprise us that creatures with similar brains that evolved from similar templates have similar emotional and cognitive experiences, whatever the ways in which they also vary from ourselves might be.

The '50s weren't a completely foreign country: you could catch old TV as it re-aired, play old records if your parents or grandparents had them, some of the books were still required reading in school; but it wasn't a web search away, and maybe media had been preserved but maybe nobody had bothered.

It's likely just bias (I'm in my 50s), but the '90s just seems like a more culturally adjacent country to now than the '80s did to the '50s. I suspect it's a side-effect of The Long Tail: '90s culture is more accessible to the present in a way that much of '50s culture simply wasn't in the '80s.

"I got The Hung Man."

"You mean The Hanged Man?"

"I mean what I meant."
