Not long now until our 15th #NewYearPlantHunt!
From 1 - 4 January, let's head out and see how many wild or naturalised plants we can find in bloom.
Resources to help us:

The data we collect will deepen our understanding of how our plants are responding to a changing climate.

For the 1st time in many years I've decided to boycott Jack Daniels and not buy any for Christmas. I'm disgusted by the way a certain president speaks about our country (and Europe). He stinks.

Fantastic news 👏
Despite what you hear from fossil fuel-funded politicians, the U.K has just generated a record amount of clean, domestic wind energy.

Enough to power 23 million homes!

U.K decarbonisation policy is a recipe for energy security.

At least 100 Pinkies flew over earlier. I wonder where they were heading? I wasn't quick enough to take a photo as I was deep in harvesting the Chrismas potatoes. Very chuffed with these.

Ugh...rain, rain go away (unless you're living somewhere that has a hosepipe ban. We do need the reservoirs replenishing). It's just relentless here today.

The weather is just foul. No chance of even stepping out the door. The fields are not just this, stick to your boots, muddy. They are fast pooling water. Which is better than it pooling in the roads (which is also happening). Stay safe out there.

On BBC Radio 4's Rare Earth next week we'll be covering urban wildlife, and we'd love to hear about the fun/creative/unusual things happening near you to make space for wildlife in towns/cities. Do reply to this and let us know!

I bought some books today, even though I already have a reading pile that's so deep, I could turn it into a fort. I just couldn't help myself. Second-hand books are irresistible.

Between weather and work I didn't get in the garden today, but out on a walk with Mouse I saw what I think (and hope) was a flock of field fares. #autumn

My gardening new year always begins with the planting of garlic bulbs. Usually I plant them on the shortest day but I'm experimenting planting them in November to see if it improves yield. 48 Solent Wight.

Good morning on this rather grey, dull day. Looks like the clouds might disperse for a time, but more rain is expected later.
My first bird of the day are the seagulls, singing as they fly over.

Having travelled many times on a train from Doncaster to London I cannot imagine the utter terror passengers must have felt on that train. Nowhere to hide, and nowhere to run. My thoughts are with all those seriously injured.

Not only have I managed to cut the grass before the rain starts but have managed to get everywhere cut just before the petrol ran out.

That concludes the lawn mowing season 2025 🤣

Small but significant glimmers of hope when it comes to politics.
When I said we weren't here to be disappointed in Labour but to replace them. I meant it.

Mouse is on her way home, four teeth lighter. She feels very sorry for herself. Lots of quiet time now for this pup.

Im keeping myself busy in the garden this today as Mouse, our 14-year-old Jack Russell, is at the vets to have some surgery on a cracked tooth. You wouldn't normally operate on a puppy of her grand age, but leaving it would be worse. So, the garden is my place to keep my mind occupied

Time to spend in the garden today. The tomato plants need clearing away, as do the cucumbers. And I need to empty the ready contents of a composter over a raised bed. But first, tea!
