Getting five faculty together for a committee meeting is way easier than scheduling an inclusive lab meeting. Once you get past three or four undergrads, there isn't an hour from 9-5 M-F that isn't packed in with class, work, internships, commuting to/from somewhere they can afford to live, etc.
Most college students are not that. Increasingly they are engaged in carework, have full-time jobs, or are otherwise responsible for things that they were not some fifteen or twenty years ago. Indeed, only the MOST privileged student has the time or space to fulfill the image of a full time student.

One thing I never get used to even after years at one of the most expensive universities on earth is seeing kids who have not yet really learned to drive operating vehicles that cost about a year‘s tuition.

At some point I added “that’s lunch” to my vocabulary and I can’t stop saying it even though people familiar with film industry lingo and people unfamiliar with it are both like “sir this is a lab meeting.”
