That 2000 election was a watershed. After that, the country began changing in a fundamental way. We will never know where led the road not taken.

Odd thing in today's politics, political careers of both men cut short over moral stand -- Sr Gore opposing Vietnam war, and Jr opposing tobacco, which cost him Tennessee, with which he would've won presidency w/o Florida.
