I have some baggage from how vastly different to the book it is (which is never a fair criticism) but I am just really allergic to the tone of it, despite the subject matter it feels like any given British dramedy of the last 20 years. Your mileage may vary though! A lot of people love it.

I think the Chris Stapleton cover was truly huge in the US and happened during the early stages of the (now fully successful) global export of Country so as more audiences (esp in the UK) have come into it as “new” genre to them it’s become a built in modern touchstone. Is my guess.

I’ll say this, it’s an honest to god mess and I will take that over something tidily boring and there’s one really amazing performance in it. But for the most part it just kinda … doesn’t work.
