I have a side gig in kids sports, and the best way to help a kid not be afraid of something is to explain it and then give them space to ask questions you answer truthfully.

Kids can tell when you're sugarcoating stuff and they understand serious concepts better than we often think.

I say this as someone who had a stepsibling with a rare neurological condition - it also becomes a lot less scary to a kid if the person in question can explain what happens in terms the kid can understand.

That sucks BUT if he's old enough to understand, you can use this as a learning moment if you take some time to talk to him about it. Then, if anyone he knows suffers this later in his life, he'll be better prepared to help them :3
