Did archery tonight and got my 3rd pin! Also got to try a bow I might get, and it took a bit of adjustment but I started doing pretty well!

Scores were 136 and 133; next pin is at 150, and it won't be easy but I'll get there!

Archery League night -- second to last week but I shot my best round EVER! With handicap I got 302 -- my first time breaking 300, and I would have had enough for my next pin (need 120 over 10 ends) if it was an official pin shoot. Yay! 💜

BEAVER COVE, Maine -- In the wilderness of northern Maine, a long tradition of allowing public access, even on privately owned lands, has shaped the region's culture and identity since the 1800s. So when "No Trespassing" signs showed up around Burnt Jacket Mountain, at the edge of Moosehead Lake, this summer, it did not go unnoticed. Neither did the new surveillance cameras and locked gates in the woods, nor the crews cutting a new road up the mountain who deflected questions from neighbors by citing nondisclosure agreements. In the tiny town of Beaver Cove, which has about 100 year-round residents, and in the wider Moosehead region, the anonymous incursion stoked unease and a fixation: Who was the mountain's new owner? The project, and the discomfort it has spawned, follows years of accelerating change in the North Maine Woods, a region nearly twice the size of Massachusetts. As COVID-19 pandemic transplants and other wealthy newcomers have put down roots -- and in some cases, put up fences - and as housing costs and real estate taxes have ballooned, some residents feel a deepening concern. "When we first came here, you could go anywhere, land your kayak anywhere, and you never gave it a thought," said Donald Campbell, a retired New York City teacher who has spent 35 summers in a modest lakeside cabin near Burnt Jacket Mountain. "Now there's hardly a place you can land. There's a feeling of sadness at losing something, a tradition of access, that maybe wasn't written down but was understood." In that unsettled atmosphere, a two-sentence email sent last October to Destination Moosehead Lake, the tourism center in Greenville, landed like a slap. "I am writing on behalf of the new Owner of the property at Burnt Jacket Mountain, requesting that you remove the reference to hiking at Burnt Jacket Mountain," it said. "As this is now private property, we'd like to deter anyone from hiking on the mountain!" The email, with its possibly ill-chosen exclamation point, came from Karen Thomas Associates, a New York firm that manages high-end residential construction. ("We are meticulous problem solvers," its website explains, "resolving any number of challenges that may arise in the course of a demanding, luxury construction project.") But the name of the owner proved elusive. The parcel -- 1,400 acres of undeveloped forest with 2 miles of lakefront -- had been purchased for $8 million in 2022 by a limited liability company that shielded the buyer's identity. Even the man who had sold the mountain --Hank McPherson, a retired logging magnate who had kept its trails open to the public --said he wasn't sure who the buyer was. "I didn't get into it," he said in an interview. "It was handled by lawyers. And to be honest, I didn't really care." Soon enough, though, a woman who used to work in Greenville's town office said she had the answer and posted it on Facebook: The new owner of the mountain was Mark Zuckerberg.

A cyclist was in an accident in Lowell the other day and all the Reddit comments are about how horrible teenagers on electric motorbikes are. So now I'm extra angry and biking around safely but confidently taking the lane as my own personal act of resistance.

Oops I checked the thread and found out... the article doesn't even say who was at fault! Just that the rider was injured and the cause is under investigation.

So unfortunately I'm back on my bullshit and gonna bike EVEN HARDER around town today
Reddit reply: Also I can't read the full article because of the paywall, but is there even any indication that this incident was from someone operating their bike irresponsibly? All I can glean is that the rider was injured and had to go to the hospital. That could have come from any number of factors, including being hit by an inattentive driver or hitting a pothole on a poorly maintained street, but based on the comments here and in the sun it must be a wheelie boy on an electric motorbike going the wrong way at 40 mph

The Lowell Sun has an article about someone getting injured on an electric motorbike so I needed to post 'please don't kill me on my class 2 ebike, and please know the difference between legal e-bikes and motorbikes as well as the laws that already exist' on Reddit this morning
Lowell Sun ebike crash story My post: As someone with a class 2 ebike who rides around Lowell a lot, the anger that follows incidents like this makes me nervous. I'm not trying to excuse illegal behavior but I just want to point out the classifications before people get into a furor of what are actually motorbikes: Class 1 e-bikes are pedal assist only and have a max motor speed of 20 mph Class 2 e-bikes can have a 'throttle' as well but also have a max motor speed of 20 mph. State law already regulates class 1/2 as bicycles and anything that goes faster is not considered a bicycle. So please consider that enforcing existing laws may help the motorbike problem before passing more laws. I do everything I can to bike safely (high vis gear, a side mirror, taking the lane when it's not safe to use the shoulder, stopping at stop signs and hand signaling.) Since most of Lowell is a 25 mph zone, I don't get passed that often going 20 and can usually see drivers coming and find a safe place to pull off to the side. But I don't think I could bike safely around greater Lowell without some assistance to be able to mostly keep up with traffic on hills and stop at intersections & stop signs without having to worry about downshifting and losing momentum, so for me I get nervous whenever these incidents are publicized because it makes it more likely for drivers to excuse inattentive driving, rolling through stop signs, or pulling out into the bike lane/shoulder before even slowing to look for oncoming traffic. I don't want to excuse blatantly illegal or dangerous behavior but please understand the difference between e-bikes and electric motorbikes, and don't let the action of obnoxious teenagers already breaking the law drive a furor that will make it even more difficult or dangerous

Here's the chili recipe by the way -- one of the first things I learned to cook and helped me realize 'ok I can actually feed myself and survive in the world'. You can use cans of beans but dried is cheaper. (From 'Help my apartment has a kitchen', a great book for making food to feed yourself)

Making kidney beans 'from scratch' (soak dried beans and boil) and making a bunch of veggie chili so I have some cheap, healthy, tasty food to shovel into my mouth for the next few days. Because tomorrow I'm getting surgery! (It should be a minor procedure, but they still gotta knock me out.)
