Cat dad, pretty decent fiancé. American in Australia
I'm still part of some online groups for people looking to immigrate to NZ and Aus. I noticed recently that those moving from most of the world are young single people. From the US many, if not most, are families with children. I don't have words for the gravity of that.

So nice being out and about without my passport. Officially not a tourist!

It would drive narcissists crazy if they could realise how formulaic they are. Once you've dealt with one narcissistic you've dealt with them all. Not an ounce of singularity. Yet each of them fancies themself the most unique and interesting person in existence.

I'm really tired of waking up every day to read about a new atrocity. I hate the way it makes me so full of hate.

There is a goddamn angel working at the Vic Roads in Carlton. My eternal gratitude to Lisa for doing twice the work to make sure my Australian liscense has my new name on it. The queen of all allies.

I've lived in lots of places that brag about how weird their weather is, but after only 6 weeks I think Melbourne takes the cake. These temperatures look like a yoyo on speed. 41 and 19 should not be so close together!

Rugby is better than American Football in every way, and the only reason more Americans don't watch it is they can't handle men touching each other's butts so much.
This place needs some Innocuous Discourse pronto. Quote this with a take that’s not political or aggressive

Went out to the protest in Melbourne and got sunscreen all over my sign. A bit awkward to chant "Yankee go home" as a certified Yankee, but only one speaker was really violently anti-American, and there was a lot of push back from the crowd and organisers. Impressive turnout on such short notice.

In my day we used manufacture consent for illegal military action, but I suppose the president never was big on consent.

If we can capture another country's president, can another country come and capture ours? Asking for a friend.

My whole family back in the US is having warmer weather for Christmas than we've had here in Victoria. I think Mother Nature got the addresses mixed up?

Sir Terry Pratchett is best understood as one of the most interesting, deeply ethical practical (I would say Pragmatist but I cede to actual experts) philosophers of the late 20th Century who just happened to work in deconstructed fantasy literature as his medium.

The truly impressive thing about the ADHD brain is not how often or how much it can forget, but how quickly. I asked Alex if she wanted a PB&J. She didn't. I suggested chicken and cheese. Sounded good. Then I made her a PB&J. Time elapsed before forgetting the chicken ~30 seconds.

I don't know who needs to hear this other than me two hours ago, but you do not need a flocked Christmas tree for your new apartment. You are not prepared for the fallout of a flocked Christmas tree, Daniel. You don't even own a vacuum cleaner yet!

When America goes 29 days without a mass shooting, maybe then Americans get to talk shit about Australian gun laws that have seen 29 years without a mass shooting on this scale. But not before

I accidentally picked up the kiwi-ism of pronouncing the O in "women" as in "woman." If I were still in New Zealand this would be fine, but it's not a thing in Australia and I have to unlearn it now.

Alex: I'm trying to learn more about the birds because I know it's important to you.
Me: What do you mean? I'm just into birds like the normal amount.
Alex: ... The normal amount of interest in birds is zero.

We have an apartment! After six inspections and 4 applications, we are moving in next Wednesday! I understand that's pretty good for Melbourne. Very grateful to have a home by Christmas. ☃️

We stopped by the park after an open house and encountered this well dressed statue. She is dedicated to the women who cared for the veterans of WW1. The scarf was clearly hand crocheted. Someone put a lot of love into it.

Maybe it's just because it's been a year and a half since I've experienced summer, but 22 degrees feels way hotter than I remember.

Applying for a rental in Australia is psychotic. I swear if this realtor actual calls my previous employer - a research lab on an American military base, they're going to think it's some kind of espionage.

I knew groceries would be cheaper in Australia but WOW they're so much cheaper.

Just sold the 2009 Subaru we bought our first week in NZ. The best car I've ever had! It's been our home base for the past 8 months. I won't miss parking it, but I'll miss the adventures it took us on. The next chapter starts tomorrow with an early flight to Aus ,🛫

I know Aotearoa still has a ways to go when it comes to toxic masculinity, but I want you all to know that the first time I saw a bunch of tradies order mochas it blew my mind. Don't rest on your laurels, but know that you're doing pretty damn well comparatively. Tldr: in the US coffee is gendered.
