A midcentury gem is for sale in my town for way too much money and we’re in no position to buy it but also just look at it, we could just go for a viewing, right? I’m sure that would disabuse us of any fantasies about living every day in a work of art.

Had somehow never watched Last Year at Marienbad before tonight. Its reputation led me to expect something ponderous, sterile, but it is so visually arresting, its camerawork so sprightly and surprising, and its pacing so hypnotic that it seemed alive in a way few films are.
